Lead, where to get it these days?

What happened? Everyone used to seem to carry lead, but now it seems near impossible to find... I just need a brick or two (~100lbs) does anyone know some place that still stocks lead? I checked out; boardstop, wakeside, buywake, boarders paradise. Pretty much every online wakeboard retailer I could think of. None of them carry lead anymore.(They must have been getting killed on shipping or something...) Anyone got some sources? I don't really want to deal with the toxicity of melting my own lead, and would prefer it if it were a shop, because I don't have the money to purchase it RIGHT this moment. I would feel bad leading on a private seller because I don't currently have the funds.

At The Wakeboard Camp they had these bricks called "Lead Headz" I remember Googling it and finding their official website, I can't find them anymore. But it is also my understanding that they have now gone under, is my recollection is correct...

They're done in. Couldn't handle shipping charges.

I got our Lead Headz off a guy we met at the docks. Check ebay? I know a few local shops sell lead bags, which are padded with handles. Pretty nifty little guys.

Check local tire shops for old weights. Ive seen people fill a section of 4" PVC glue caps on both ends and put a set of handles on them. Or you could melt them down yourself, just use the neccessary safety measures when you do that.

If you don't want to melt, elevator test weights and counter weights work really well! They're pretty thin, like 1" - 2" thick and vary in width and length. If I had to guess, and I do since I don't have one on my desk, I'd say the ones I have are around 5" wide and 8"-10" long. They weigh a ton and sit nicely in any storage area, although I'd advise wrapping them in something and not moving them around if you have them somewhere difficult to get to.

You would have to do some digging, but if I were you I'd try sweet talking a state elevator inspector, you'll have to dig for that contact info, but those guys always know where to get that sort of thing and it probably wouldn't cost you more than a case of beer.

I used to use lead but the only problem is there isn't much adjustment. I would try some sacs or somethin homemade. (some old tubes or something) That way if you pick up some extra people you can always adjust. Water is free and easy to throw overboard unlike lead

D, would I would suggest doing is going to a tractor yard or something similar and see if they have any tractor weight laying around. We have two 100 pounds plates in the nose of the GS. We got them rhino lined so they wont rust on the carpet. We also have two more 150 laying on the RV pad right now. Actually now that I think of it, We need to throw those in the back of the GS, Easy small weight.

What about buying 45 lb lifting plates? They are flat and don't seem to be too expensive. Would you still have to wrap them in something?

Where would you put them? That is a big plate. How much a pound do they cost? I feel that you need somthing that can be out of the way, maybe not seen at all. weight on the deck is nice. you can move it around to fix the wake. I would wrap the plates so they are soft and do not slide when stacked. Rust?

I've priced the olympic weight lifting plates 45' plate= about $15. I just found this website. Lead is avail here in almost any form, I'm going to call tomorrow, Note sailboat ballast in a 55' "pig"

Try Troy Lindstrom(sp??)on WW. He sells the POP bags. Everyone says they are super nice. Same problem though, shipping. I got my lead at a tire shop. One word....free.

If you live in near New England Boat works or any yard that is very into racing maxi sailboats, you can get A FRIGGIN LOT of lead for cheap. A friends of ym family pours keels for big boats and buts between 10000 and 50000lbs for around $2000-$10000. Also, ask about rating pigs. The main problem is shipping. That's the reason I didn't go for that option. It costs alot for moving 300lbs of a toxic substance. The pigs will come in about 40lbs cubes (used for leveling the boats while in the water for measurement). They wont be pretty but they will be functional.
