Take a pretty mellow cut in and initiate it the same way as you would a tantrum. Once you've left the wake and can feel yourself go back into the tantrum swipe the handle over and across your head, think of putting your bicept in front of your face. Once you unwind bring the handle down towards your lead hip. If you cut too hard it will be hard to get the handle in the right position.

I would like to try them. I have like 6 flips including tantrum and I would like to try the Whirlybird. I can do them on the tramp. Do I need a big wake?

Whirly is identical to tantrum until you are about a quarter done with the flip. (at least thats I I have landed them). Trying to throw the trick off the wake makes the rotation way harder and usually doesnt keep your elbow in front of your face. Once you are laid out about a quarter through the rotation throw your lead hand across your face, putting your face into your arm pit as best you can. The first time you do this right you will feel the rope pull you through the 360. Then its all in the landing.

Its a really frustrating trick to learn because once you start getting close, you get de-booted everytime just about, and end up having to continually put on your bindings over and over. If you take them too big (like I was initially doing) you over-rotate the flip and end up butting out and loosing the handle. Once you are coming down and trying to land I personally try to stick the rope on my lead hip to help from getting pulled over the front of the board, because usually the rope is above your head from the rotation you intiated.

Good luck, watch a lot of video and you will see how it is very similar to a tantrum.

You need a bit more air, you want to get good straight up pop off the wake. And you can definitely spin it from where you started, you just need to spin it faster... you're rotating a bit slow there. Try not keeping your lead arm as straight and extended off the wake either, that'll slow your rotation and make it tougher to wrap your arm around your face.

I just recently started trying them and have landed one, but what I've been concentrating on is really waiting to pop and not throw it off the wake. Do a couple floaty tantrums right before and try to imitate that cut. after that just initiate the spin like you are doing and look over your back shoulder for the landing. to me it feels like I'm doing two spins with the rope overhead. Good luck.

I just tried two whirly's today. The first time I tried it I had too much line tension to pull the handle up to my head so i did a nasty looking tantrum http://www2.gvsu.edu/~vereshmj/help.html labelled "I swear I was going to try a whirly...".

The second time I was just thinking about pulling my bicep across my face; so I went off of the wake on edge and got hung up in the air b/c i didn't get the trip from the wake - it's labelled "Ouch" on the same web page.

Any tips on combining the tantrum and the 360? Did I pull it right on the second clip even though i obviously messed it up with the take off?

Thanks for the help...and enjoy the R2R fall too :p

PS. This f'in hurt so I hope u guys at least get some laughs :p.

that one whirly looked like a frantrum. it didnt even look like you were looking in the direction you needed to spin.

I agree pb.

I remember I went at that trick for 3 sets straight until I got it. Then I realized I wasnt having any fun and getting all frustrated and decided to chill out some. Now I try a couple every now and again but kinda chillin on the whole trick list thing. I drilled myself the other day trying the same trick over and over until I sprained my ankle. Time to chill again, D@mn my aggressive nature.

The tricks will come, just dont break yourself for one freaking trick. It takes the fun out of it.

Those are all good tips, but I used a mental trick to help me get it. When I cut at the wake, I try to pay attention to the line tension in my front hand, and it helps me get the right pop and spin. Also, if you are not getting the spin at all and are taking off too early, try edging in just a bit harder. That's what helped me.
