I used to have a pile of external HDs for storing all of my photos... that was a pretty ghetto setup.

I just put in a new system here, complete with a few pictures. It's a bit less ghetto...

I still have to get a tape autoloader (Exabyte VXA-2 probably) as well as put in shelves for more components, but it's coming along. There are two UPSes... the little one on the bottom left just powers the hubs and router..I have a much larger one for the computer system.

It's a 5x400GB RAID system, with 4x250GB LaCie's underneath to do weekly on-line backups. Once I put the tape system in, I'll do D2D2T backup (Disk to Disk to Tape), and do offsite storage.

I just had to share my excitement... I've had the system for about a week now, and it's pretty damn fast.

Mike

Very Nice Mike - I am jealous. I take it you can expand that - how much can you go to?

I can go up to 14x400 drives in the XServe RAID unit, for up to 5.6TB total. With mine, I have 5x400gb, but setup in a RAID-5 system, so I have 1.45TB usable space, and about 930GB usable space on the LaCie's below.

Or you can install several of the RAIDs if you need a lot of space, like a buddy of mine: http://intranet.21productions.com:8081/PumaLives.jpg .

Where did you get the black casing for it all from? I haven't seen those before... So how much space is being used on that system at the moment?

dmb, the black casing is an APC NetShelter, 19" rack that's 25U tall. It weighs about 300lbs, and was not fun to get to my 2nd-floor home office. The Motorola modem was probably the single cheapest item in that cabinet!

I'm using about 1/3 of the capacity at the moment. This past year I upgraded to all 8MP equipment, so everything needs more space. Having the additional space gives me freedom to save layered PSDs and other things that I might not keep "on-line".

m4t1x, the whole setup above... well, if one wanted, one could buy a nice Kia or Daewoo car instead, for the same price. Hit up Apple.com and look at the prices for XServe and XServe RAID, and it'll give you a ballpark. Plus, the black metal cabinet alone is about $1k.

Cheers,

Mike
