I'm 33 and going to buy my first skateboard. I'm tired of just sitting there watching my son skate and it looks like alot of fun. Any old skaters out there? |

I'm 27. Ever since Rodney got into the Tony Hawk games flatland/freestyle has grown in popularity. Now I'm cool!
A lotta the guys that destroy ramps/bowls at the parks I go to are older dudes. When I went to the opening of the new skatepark at the Encinitas Y the only dude who landed a 540 McTwist was 44. Mike McGill wasn't even landing 'em that day (although he threw a DIRTY smith grind around the coping of the new pool. I'm pretty sure I saw sparks fly off his trucks) |

I took it up when I was 20 and felt really old. I went to a skatepark when I was first learning. All these kids were like 10 and I'm towering over them. They all expect me to be good but I was worse than most of them so it was awkward. Haven't been back to a skate park since.
I don't skate much anymore but it is HARD. It will help with your wakeboarding and especially snowboarding. I love the challenge though. Get a good board, not one of those wal-mart ones. They just don't work. You can go to a skate shop and ask for recomendations but when you're first starting it doesn't really matter what you have (as long as it's not one of those wal-mart boards). Once you figure out the carving thing you can practice your ollies on the carpet or grass before you take it to the concrete.
Check out the completes here (comes with everything all put together):

You'll probably spend around $90-120 on a decent setup. _________________ You have just entered the twilight zone. |

Sweet! Mermaid, If you find you don't like regular skating, then grab a longboard skate board and just cruise around with your kid. I used to skate alot when I was a kid. Now, I am usually on my longboard when I need to go get something from the store.
Good luck and have fun.
Check these boards out.
