| I just bought an 85 sn2001 and everything has been great so far, except today halfway through the day reverse went out. I have already checked the thing that engages in the transmission, and it still moves backwards smoothly, and the tranny still engages smoothly in forward, what should I look at next? |

Is it stuck in fowards? Then chech the throttle cables and the connection to the engine and look for missing bolts.

Just check that there aren't any breaks in it. That souinds like a tranny problem though.

I would say you have the beginnings of a tranny rebuild on your hands. Mine went out, but it was forward that went. Check you fluid levels and be sure you have not ATF leaking into the bilge.

bleebdat,
With the motor cover up, can you shift it into reverse manually? (You'll need to have the throttle lever moved off center to try.) If so, you have new slop in the linkage/cable/helm control that needs to be adjusted out. If you cannot shift into reverse manually, then yes, you have something far more sinister (internal) on your hands. But a clutch pack does not typically quick working altogether without a little advance warning (ie noise), so if it quick suddenly and altogether without some nasty abuse, it's probably something simpler than a tranny rebuild.
Good luck,

I had been without reverse this entire season, we still rode because we ride real early and I'm a very careful driver. We'd been trying to figure out the entire summer what was wrong, all the linkages looked good and matched what the service manual said it should look like. Well, just two days ago we delved in lower, and found this piece of black plastic (throttle assist guide, or something) that had broken off on one side. It would push into forward, and fall back to neutral, but since one of the arms was off, it wouldn't shift into reverse. We ordered the piece yesterday, it only cost 8 bucks. Mine is an inboard/outboard, so if yours is an inboard it may be set up different (my problem was in the lower unit), but I reckon an inboard has a piece that works the same way. _________________ '05 Supra Launch 24SSV |
