The last year we've constantly had Iraq, Afghanistan, Israel, and the Middle East in the news. So can you find them on a map? How about the US and the Pacific Ocean? It's amazing how many Americans can't - would you believe 11% of the 18-24 year old Americans polled couldn't located the US on a global map???

So take the poll and see how you do:
http://geosurvey.nationalgeographic.com/geosurvey/templates/question_1.html

I got 19/20 - missed the religion question.

I thought this statistic was interesting:

National Geographic wrote:
Americans who reported that they accessed the Internet within the last 30 days scored 65 percent higher than those who did not.

20/20, and yes, the U.S. statistics are disgusting. Our school systems are so self-centered. Our students know nothing about the current political climate in the world. I took a class my freshman year at CU called Geography of Global Change. It was all about current global politics and how the U.S. related to all of it. By far one of the best classes I've ever taken, and it had nothing to do with my major (journalism, where we obviously study world affairs since the news is kinda our job...). Yes it's good to learn U.S. history, but how about some current events studies? We're so isolated and self-centered as a whole country, it's no wonder so many other countries have so little respect for us...

Just my 2 cents. I'm not cutting anybody down here, just making a generalization. I mean, I was at a party last night and some kid thought Montreal was a Canadian province that wasn't French...it's a little sad to see how ignorant a lot of students (and Americas as a whole) are about the rest of the world.

Stats are always misleading. The USA is not connected to the rest of the world in the same manner the rest of the world in connected to the USA. Not making excuses but to the average American they could care less about what religion has the greatest following. A lot of things inherent to our culture make us less aware of these barriers that seperate the other countries.

That being said I agree that our education system needs to imporve but I also believe I recieved a great public education. It's all about what the individual puts into school. Another great American trait is that extreme individualism. I'm about to graduate college and I've come to realize how little I truly know.

Both my parents got a 19/20. Issues with the religion question for my Dad and then Kashmir for my mom. I'll have my little sis take it tomorrow.

I found the geography ones were almost too easy. If you know the basic region they only gave you the choice of one number in that area.

Well apparently this proves that wakeboarders are smarter than the average 18-24 year olds - or at least the ones they surveyed. Maybe it's just the wakeboarders that use the Internet regularly. Or maybe the people that didn't do well didn't bother to post their results.

Agreed Nor*Cal - The US doesn't have the same interest in the rest of the world as the rest of the world does in us or in the rest of the world (get that?).
