There was a thread about this a while back and had some very good ideas. I took some advice from it and ended up using cable pulling lubricant from home depot. Works great and is very inexpensive.

i just ran out of lube also and was thinking of using dishwashing soap like palmolive or something like that. soap should not hurt the bindings any, right?

wrong... i think that soap is supposed to detiorate the rubber in bindings.. wouldnt use it. grab ur can of shaving cream. Plus soap stays to lubricated even after u get up and ride. Shaving cream washes right out so your stuck in ur bindings.

28 oz of generic KY Jelly about 13 bucks at Wally World. I think it comes in 4 oz tubes, so they tend to look at you funny if thats the only thing you're buying.

Squeeze them into a 1 gallon jug fill the rest with water, shake and your done. It will thin out enough to spray.

KY should be safe for ALL rubbers and its water soluable so it clears out pretty quickly.

Is it environmentally responsible?

3 parts water and 1 part dishsoap in a spray bottle.

Environmentally responsible? It's biodegradable, but hell...I drive a 3/4 ton diesel as my daily driver. I'm not in a position to criticize.

Every little bit helps. Some times you have to do what you have to do... but I buy a gallon of Babes lube and it lasts pretty long. I don't think that the trouble of making my own would be worth the savings.

That's just me, though.

I would say that KY is just as responsible as Binding lube if not more resonsible. IMO if it is odorless and tasteless(so I'm told) and its safe to be inside your body, it cant be bad for the environment. I have tasted Newt Juice while priming the hose to my buddies sprayer and it tasted like stuff. So there is definitly something that cant be good in it.

In all fairness cameraboy, I have not compared ingredients, but I'm almost certain the FDA would not approve Babes Boot Butter as a personal lubricant. Laughing Hence my reasoning for KY being environmetally safe.

Not too mention if you tried to lube a ladies a$$ with Boot Butter she might get a little upset. Evil or Very Mad Laughing

joedirt00 I think he was getting at just because it is safe for your body doesn't mean it's environmentally friendly. Chances are yes it's okay, but as he said it's not the best barometer.

As for the FDA, they are just another governmental agency as easily swayed by the dollar as anyone else in Washington. Pretty sad, but just look at what they have approved for us.

As for making your own, use a phosphate free soap and dilute.

joedirt00, I don't want to start anything with you, and don't take this personally, but the logic might be off. You might be right about the KY, but your argument that :

"If it is FDA approved for internal use, then it is environmentally friendly" is not necessarily always true. I think that KY is probably ok, though. I just don't think that the argument that "safe for human consumption = environmentally safe" is always true.

I wasn't starting anything and I don't take anything personally here. Now that I re-read the last couple posts I guess I should have put some smiley's on it. Embarassed

Use soap. I know waterskiers with bindings so tight that it is amazing that a human foot can fit in them. They keep their bindings for years and all they use is a dab of dove $1/bottle dish soap.

The only time you should use waterbased water lube is if you are in a lake with a specific type of weed killer that floats on the surface. The soap will break the water tention and the stuff won't float.

I have heard that soap dries out bindings, but in all my years I am yet to see it happen--it is only in your bindings for a few seconds. Now sun, that will kill bindings.

Bubble bath.

You can get like a gallon jug for a $1. Mix it with water in an old squeeze mustard bottle or something similar. Wallah. A buddy turned me on to this a few weeks back.

Cheap and it smells good too!

How much soap are you guys putting in your bindings? I have diluted dish soap and it takes like a teaspoon in each boot.

Justin H. hit the nail on the head. Having your boards sit on board racks all day in the sun till do more damage to a binding than soap will ever do. Buy whatever you like, I personally go cheap as possible.

I mix water and glycerin, 2 parts water to 1 part glycerin and use a cheap push top spray bottle. Works awesome. Glycerins the main ingredient in KY Lube, so its safe on rubbers. I don't know about the enviromental impact though.

What about all of these making the handle slippery
Some of the shaving creams have lubricants, and I know for a fact it ruined a handle of mine, making it too slippery for any handle passes?????

Yes, leaking gasoline hurts the environment MORE than dish soap. But just because our sport is inherently environmentally destructive doesn't mean that you shouldn't try to make that impact minimal.

I've said it before and I'll say it again: After the 400 dollar board, 300 dollar bindings, 36,000 dollar boat, 120 dollar handle, 120 bucks to fill the boat with gas, what's 6 bucks for environmentally safe lube?

Make your own lube? Some of you have way too much free time or are just going through some sort of Martha Stewart withdrawals. It is not like there aren't cheap effective products you can buy right off the shelf that will get the job done.

Go to your local dollar store and you can buy:
Liquid Hand soap (my choice)
Shaving cream
Bubble Bath
Dish Soap
KY type gels
Bubble solution (glycerine based water mixture and you can entertain the boat fluff and kids between sets)

They ALL work and only cost $1.
