How much oil do I need to put in the 350ci engine. I'm not too sure if I have the right dipstick as it shows full at only 4 litres??

To get a little more technical. Does it have an oil cooler or anything like that? If not, follow "moblsv" advise.

Assuming its a chevy motor, wouldnt it be a 5.7L 350? So it would take 5.7 L of oil??? _________________ Im going muddin at waketoberfest 2004

No, the 5.7 L or 350 ci refers to the volume of the cylinders from from the top of the piston stroke to the bottom. Although bigger engines generally hold more oil there is no direct correlation to displacement..

Unless you are more specific, nobody can tell you. It totally depends on the oil pan capacity which can vary a lot.
You don't want to underfill but in a boat, without all the lateral g's of a car, you can probably let the oil get pretty low without losing pressure at any point. Do you have a pressure gauge? Is it ever low?
You also don't want to overfill it to the point where it makes contact with the crank and foams up.
If you don't have a proper reference, maybe you can hold the dipstick next to the tube and see if the the full mark looks like it would end up somewhere around the top of the oil pan when inserted. |

if you fill it to the top of the oil pan half of the crankshaft will be submerged in oil and you will get major foaming. i think he means the top of the bottom of the pan if that makes any sense. here is a very rough sketch i just did. this is what your oil pan shoudl look like from the side and the shaded area is how much oil i believe should be in it.
