What are some of your RBA (Ridioulus Boating Adventures) stories?
Ill start it off so me an a few other friends are out in the boat and we shut the boat off and left the stereo on and went onto an island for a while. We get back on and the battery is dead but the boat has 4 batteries so we hooked the engine up to a differnt battery. It starts up but none of the electronics work (nav lights, gauges) . Its about 7:30 pm now and about to get dark and we get a call from a buddy who has also run out of batteries on his boat and cant get it started so we go get him and start towing him not knowing how much gas we had. We get about half way there and our boat runs out of gas! We start drifting into a shoal the boat we were towing was a malibu of course being an inboard its hard to get them off when they run aground. So I called another friend who brought us some gas and we got our boat out but the malibu we couldnt get out so we had to wait till high tide the next day to go and get it.............

That sucks man. I dropped my boat in the water last Sunday, my girl pulled it away from the ramp and over to the dock. While everyone was jumping into the boat I noticed that the bilge was pumpin a hell of a lot of water out. I then happened to remember that I forgot to put the plug in when I launched the boat. I tried to pull the boat back to the ramp and the engine cut out. I ended up having to jump into the water that was about 9 feet deep and 48 degrees to put the plug in. It sucked to say the least but it was my own damn fault.

ha ha...totally similar story. I took this chick out on our first date in my old boat when I was in college...trying to be cool and all. Well I back the boat in the water and pull away and park the truck. I come strolling back and notice she's looking at me sort of weird. She says "is it supposed to do that?" pointing at the shin deep water in the boat. D'oh! I forgot the plug. So I run back to the truck, grab the plug, dive in the water and get it on. They we sat there for about 20-30 minutes while the bilge did it's thing...then another 30 minutes trying to get it started. Then it gave me problems all day. It was an adventure to say the least.

my youth church group decided to take everyone to big bear lake to have some fun and ride seedos and stuff. I convinced my parents to go and take our boat to teach some of my friends how to wakeboard. When we first get up to big bear and launch the boat and start driving out, the bildge kicks on and starts pumping out hella water. The boat kept getting lower in the water and we're like, oh snap, this boats about to sink. So we go as fast as we can back to the launch and my dad goes and gets the truck and starts backing it up down the ramp, he's turning the wheel but the tires aren't turning. THE DRIVE SHAFT SNAPPED. So now we have a boat filling up with water and a truck stuck on the ramp. After a huge fiasco we got it all taken care of and survived.
Imagine if we were driving back down the hill and the drive shaft snapped while we were going down. We would have gone off a cliff. Needless to say we had jesus on our side since we were at a church camp.

I'm going to have to be a dick and say, leaving the plug out is not an RBA. that happens on a daily basis at every boat ramp in the world practically.
vision135, that sounds pretty rediculous

I went out to a friend's lake/river house with him one year and it was sooo bad heres what happend:
First off we get there and its pouring rain which sucked and then it cleard up enough to put their boat in. their boat was brand new as in 0 hours and they put it in and we went for a cruise. all these buzzers started going off and because he hadent been in the boat b4 he had no idea what they ment. so were gettin really low in the water and hes talking about how there must be a hole in the hull and i was like well did you put the plug in?? and he goes "a plug for what". so he runs us back to the ramp and puts the boat on the ramp because the tide was going out and it wouldnt sink anymore. so me and my friend and his sister and mom go back to the house like 5 miles away to get the trailor my friends mom left us at the house and weent back to the ramp and of course it started storming again and she had to go on some sand road back to the ramp. the road had washed out and she got stuck. so now they had a boat sinking in the lake and a car stuck on some private back road in the woods. so his mom walked all the way back to the house and we called fot the park ranger that they new to com and help us out well long story short it took until 11:30 that night to get the car/trailor unstuck and by then the boat was on the ramp because the tides had gone oout so we had to stay in the car over night so that we cold catch the boat the next morning when it started to float again. It was really bad. and there were like a lot of other things that made it bad like that all the rain made the roof cave in on the house and other bad stuff.
o and when I refer to he that is my friends dad and they really hadnt had a boat with a plug b4 so it was kinda funny.

| This is not my story.. but happened to a few friends... they all went camping in a damned lake... 2 boats.. 1 jet ski, 2 pwcs... they picked a small island in the middle to camp on... after a night of partying... they woke up in the morning to see 20 feet+ of land behind all of their water crafts and boats. Water was let out of the lake during the night.... So they had to rig up ropes and used the pwc's to pull the beached boats... I saw pics... there was mud everywhere!

| family friends story: he's a hardcore fisherman, gets up early, drives an hour to the lake before work, fishes for 2 hours, drives back, goes to work, comes home, goes and does it again. Anyway one time my brother went w/ him and his son (brothers best friend) and they are getting ready to put the boat back on the trailer. There is a lady backing some huge cabin cruiser deal down the ramp, and not very well. Anyway my brother (like 10 at the time) and his friend are not really watching and are just holding the boat at the dock while his dad goes to get the trailer. When he gets to the ramp, this lady is just pulling up the ramp in her van.....but theres no trailer attached. My brother and his friend look over and see the boat tied up on the other side of the dock and theres something attached to the front eyelet......the trailer. She launched this thing by herself (barely) and unhooked the trailer from the van instead of the boat from the trailer, and the trailer was dangling below this huge boat with the tail end resting on the ramp. needless to say they loaded up the boat and got out of there stat.

One of many RBA…
Disclaimer: I was like 19 at the time and insanely irresponsible. No sense of morality/mortality whatsoever.
I’m much better now… I promise.
Hooked up the Rally 4-banger (I/O) up to the 72 Ford pickup, filled the cab with friends and made a run to Lazy M marina at the Delta.
Crew = me, two buddies (crazy brothers), and some dude that I didn’t know that the brothers invited. I felt sorry for that kid because he obviously had no idea what he was in for.
Got to Lazy M, must’ve been over 100 deg outside and was packed. Checked everything out and found boat battery was dead… No worries, we’ll just use the battery out of the truck. About a case of beer later we finally got the boat in the water. Had to park the truck in the way back of the lot because everyone and their brother was out. Yanked the battery out of the truck and lugged that thing all the way to the damn boat. Hopped in the boat and tried to start it. Fired up for about 15 secs and died. When through this about 5x, then flipped the motor cover and stated investigating. Found that the carb float was jacked. I cursed a few times, and went to get a beer from the cooler. We put the cooler on the dock while I worked on getting the boat running.
Picture: Boat tied at dock, 4 guys standing on dock around the cooler. Like one guy at each side of the cooler.
John (one of the brothers) has a beer in one hand, a joint in his mouth, and a lighter in the other hand. Lights the joint, immediately Shawn (the other brother) slaps the joint out of John’s mouth and starts yelling about John starting a fire because I smelled like gas from the carb… John grabs Shawn and they begin wrestling. Dale goes down to get another beer from the cooler and catches an elbow to the mouth. He falls backward into the boat and landed on the tools, boards, engine cover, etc. Not only did he have a huge fat lip, but several fresh bruises to go with it…but worse, in the process of falling back into the boat, he knocked over the cooler. John, Shawn, and I all watch in horror as all our beers rolled out into the water. Needless to say we all immediately dove into the water to save what we could. Meanwhile, Dale starts yelling about the huge fat lip he just got, and something about the boat taking on water.
I pulled myself back up onto the dock and verified that the damn plug wasn’t in… the boat was sinking and the ass end was about 6” down… Panic mode. John and Shawn were still diving for beers, Dale is whining about his fat lip (it was knarly, he got it good as I didn’t harsh him for spilling the cooler). I jumped into the boat and yanked the battery. I lugged the battery in the baking heat all the way back to the truck and got the trailer back in the water in record time. Got the boat up to the trailer, winched it up, and began to pull it out… Suddenly I heard the scrapping sound… the damn motor was down. Had to yank the battery back out of the truck, put it into the boat, lift the motor, yank it back out of the boat and put it back into the truck.
We finally got the boat off the launch and back into the lot, and managed to retrieve almost all the beers that fell into the water! So there we were sitting in the back of the truck with the cooler restocked with beer… the only thing we failed to notice was the Sheriff approaching us, apparently we caught his attention when scrambling to get the boat out of the water.
There were so many things wrong it was just wrong… We got off painfully, but easily. Instead of arresting us for under age drinking he just made us pour all our beer out in front of him. Oh yea, Dale had a warrant for failure to appear… he got cuff’d an stuff’d, fat lip and all.
… one of many…

| when i was deep sea fishing in my dads boat i saw this newly wed husband and wife trying to get the boat out of the water. the wife is driving the boat... bad idea, and the husband is telling her to line the boat up with the trailer and glide it in. She gets all crooked and decideds to spin a 180 and try it again... the prop goes right into the trailer and chops it all up. The husbands jaw drops and the wife is all "i don't want to hear it." so she goes in for the second attempt. goes in perfectly. then the husband says "give it a lil gas to nudge it all the way up." the wife guns it, and the bow swings up and catches the guy right in the face. Omg i was laughing so hard. I would have thrown that biatch in the water and left her. Not only does she eff the boat up, she gives you black face.

Long story short. I was in a 16ft aluminum boat. It was wavy and we just hit the bong pretty hard. So my friend thought it would be funny to start jumping the waves. Well we hit a wave sideways that launched us both out of the boat. The boat is one with the steering and throttle directly on the engine. So when we were launched the engine was turned and at full throttle. Now the boat is circle us turned and full speed. So I swam as deep as I could and for as far as possible to get on the outside of the circling boat.
This was drawing a ton of attention so there were boats wathcing this aluminum boat like a mile out on lake stclair going full speed with no one on it. One of them decide to pick us up. They attempt to circle the boat so we could jump in. Keep in mind we were super high at this point. The boats turning radius was to much for the one we were on now so it made it hard to get close. The guy trys one more time knocks the engine by accident and it turns off. We pull up next to it. The boat is filled with water and the guy looks at us shaking his head. We look and the bong is floating in the middel of the boat.

Mikey27, really???
we only ran out of gas on norris lake in TN and had to get towed in by a malibu
we also ran out of gas at the lake i normally ski at. the gauge was off and luckily the lake is small, so we swam it back to the dock.

ohio_wake_2008, If you look closely at the front of the boat it seems to be tied off to something. I cant think of any reason to tie it off if it was beached like that.
Josh R, correct me if I am wrong.

ok i have one.
two summers ago we are out on the lake. towards the end of the day the engine dies, we think we are out of gas. so we drop anchor, since it is super windy, and hang out a bit. a boat rolls by , and we flag them down. being nice people they take my buddy to the marina, and he fills our 5 gallon reserve can, and they bring him back. we inturn give them quite a few beers.
Now, the good part is during the time it took for my buddy to be driven to the marina and return. Me and my other buddy are tired. so we make sure the anchor is tied off good, and proceed to nap, me in the bow, him on the rear sun deck. It was windy, like super windy, there was lots of chop, and boats going by sending giant rollers. So i wake up after a 15 minute power nap, and notice we are not in the same spot. hmm.. i yell at my buddy. he wakes up. i say, why the hell are we over here now! did the anchor not bite well enough? he then goes to tug on the anchor line. but,...its not there. due to the windy, rollers, and chop. the boat had been knocked around enough that the anchnor knot he tied came undone. the anchor is now 110 feet below us, along with 150ft of rope. we have no oars. so its a matter of us jumping in and pushing the boat away from the shore line.
worst part was . the gas gets back. boat doesnt start, we still ended up being towed in. got home. plenty of gas i nthe tank(s), but the fuel pump was shot.
p.s. we have a new anchor now. attached at the end of the line is a carribeaner type thing so we dont lose another anchor.

Junkee, that happened to me too, but we were lobster fishing on my dads deep sea boat right off the coast of catalina. My cousin was driving and he ran over one of the nets lines and it got all tangled up in the prop. It was real stormy and we got pushed by some good size waves all the way onto this rocky beach for about 20 minutes while my dad was in the water trying to saw the rope all off. Needless to say we escaped without too much damage to the boat.
Wow, i have a lot of ridiculous boating adventures

One time I was driving the boat alone for the first time back from the marina it was being fixed at 45 minutes away for transmission problems. The trip is fine, radio blarin, cruising at 30 mph, then I slow down to dock the boat. I put it in neutral, then in forwards. It goes backwards. I try neutral again. Now every direction in reverse and I have 20-30 mph cross wind and 2 foot whitecaps on a lake pushing me sideways at about 5 mph or idle speed. So I turn the boat in reverse and turn the wheel all the way over to cancel out the wind/waves and slam it in reverse. I grab my dock as I turn off the boat (no neutral) and then the wind swings it around and I push it in the slip.
Then my dad walks up to me from his car. (he just got back as I got in) "Did it go, OK?"

| i was pulling my little brother tubing. he was about 6 at the time. the tube was one of those huge flat ones. so i was pulling him along and he starts to get airborne. he was like 2 feet off the water, so i wasn't too worried. then he went higher, about 4 feet, and i could tell from his face that he was getting scared. i slowed the boat down and he went flying up. he was about 12 feet in the air, and since the boat was now stopped, the tube's lift was gone. the thing flipped over, and my brother landed on his back. he was screaming the loudest i've ever heard, and to this day he won't let me pull him on a tube.

I was loading up my new Bu and I don't know what the heck happened but I somehow got my most accident prone friend in my truck to pull the boat out when I'm ready. Well, I got the trailer in too deep so the boat is floating over the trailer a little sideways, prop turning a bit. I try to pull the boat over by grabbing the tower but I can't get any leverage on it cause it's just a bit too far away from the dock. I hop in the boat to grab a rope to tie to the tower so i can pull it over from the dock and my buddy thinks it's good to go so he starts pulling out. I yell at him to stop but my truck is a loud diesel and he can't hear me. The trailer comes up into the sideways floating boat and I hear a loud BAD sound from underneath. The prop went into the bunk, cut through it and hit the trailer. Wasted
He get's it out of the water completely with the boat all crooked on the trailer before stopping, jumping out of the truck and going "oh stuff".
He backs back down and we get the boat sitting right to take it home.
A new bunk on the trailer, a new prop and we're good to go.

| A long time ago I was out watersking and wiped out. As always, the spotter was talking to the driver and they didn't notice right away. When they did, they turned the boat around and then just sat there. They were just far enough away that I couldn't quite hear them, the wind was coming up and blowing them away faster than I could swim toward them. We were right in the middle of the lake, like a mile from shore, and no boats around. I gave up trying to get to the boat and swam back to shore and walked to the marina which was a couple of miles away for help. It turned out that just before we went out we had put on a new prop. When they went to turn around the driver put the boat in reverse (for some unknown reason) and the prop just spun itself off the shaft and headed for the bottom of the lake.

I forgot to put the plug back in today. I'm stupid. Luckily I noticed the bilge was running before it got bad...ran to the truck and got it. No biggie. But could have been bad. Oh...then I got stuck on a sand bar....twice. Good times.

Check this, after a 2 day bender my buddies and i think it is a good idea to go up to New pass and party for the day. We take the gulf up there in about 5 foot seas 14ft aluminum hull boat with a 35 on the back. On the way home were finishing off the day by taking shots of jack and vodka about an hour north of the marina and about half a mile from shore. We run out of gas but finally find someone to take us in to fill a spare can but to drunk to think of having them pull our boat in. We get back to the boat and fill it up and were on our way, but we start to celebrate to early. just about the time we finish passing the doobie and jack around we hear a beeping noise, we just ran out of oil for the engine and it dies on our as*es. Its getting dark so 2 of us jump overboard and swim to shore, walk 2 miles got the oil and haules a** back to the boat. We finnaly made it back in worn out and sh*t faced Good Times

One evening my family and some friends of ours decide to head up river for a nice meal at the pub. We check our tank is full and head off, just behind their boat. It's a long flat out run up there and takes about 40 minutes. Anyway, we get to the pub, have dinner and begin to return.
Flat out for another mile or two then into the 10mph zone past the naval base in Plymouth. It's gotten pretty dark by now. We are slightly behind our friends' boat and run out of Petrol. He doesnt notice for a while and carrys on.
As we sit there, waiting for him to return, we realise that we are drifting towards the biggest aircraft carrier in the Royal Navy. We begin to worry as there are stories of them shooting anyone within a 50m radius. We can hear someone on board shouting at us through a megaphone. More worried.
Eventually our friend returns and gives us his spare fuel. By now it is pitch black and the sea has become pretty rough. We have to return to our harbour pretty much blindfolded.
