Nothing is worse than finding something you are passionate about portrayed in worst way possible. Grubb has always been a kook but he has now taken it to new heights. Next time you are at the magazine rack, check out the August issue of Men's Fitness. This 3 page spread was the gayest interpretation of one of the corest water sports. What's next, Grubb will probably start riding for Oscar Myer Weiner and endorsing them, he my.as.well already, after this article and his gay jean commercial. If you are going to go outside the industry than you truly need to make sure it is done in the right way. Otherwise we will never get the recognition that we have worked so hard to achieve.

Every group has it's "core" group and corporate/competitive group of people. Grubb probably got paid to do that article and paid well. Plus he gets his face in Men's Health which has a huge distribution, thus introducing wake skating to a whole new crowd. Most guys that read that article aren't going to go out and try wake skating, but they might recognize what it is the next time some one is talking about it.
The whole corporate sell out crap is old. If people are willing to pay you to do something you love and talk about it, then I say more power to him.
Maybe Tiger Woods shouldn't accept any money from Nike any more so he too can remain "core". Rolling Eyes

I do agree in that it would have been nice if he had some sort of creative control over the final version of the project. (and maybe now it's a lesson learned? who knows.) Shaun white has an interview in the latest snowboarder mag and he talked about how he basically has the power to veto any crappy ideas one of his manistreamy sponsors may have. So while he's cashing in, he's doing it responsibly...

However, I will go to bat for grubb, as I'm in one of my phases where I think that he's just the best...ab fab, whatever you want to call it. In reality, he's one of the best ambassadors wakeskating has. I get sick of telling this story, and I'm sure many people on here are sick of reading it. But he did a demo a few years back and he was nothing but nice, truly approachable, and seriously psyched on wakeskating. I'm so shy sometimes it's stupid, but he was totally willing to converse with me about wakeskating and whatever other crap I wanted to show him. It goes down as one of my favorite demos I've ever been a part of (and a huge factor IS the person involved and their attitude).

Anyway, people will bitch about the jean commercial, or his hair, or this new article (which HE DIDN"T write). But he's a true talent, a friendly person (which is always good when it comes to stoking out young and old alike), and more often than not, he's pretty fun to watch when he's riding (check out "money can't buy").

And just to end this, when these "core" sports move into the mainstream, these projects aren't always perfect. Do you think skaters were portrayed in the best light possible? How about snowboarders? THink stereotypes--neon, rebellious, destructive punks, "dude", "radical", etc. I mean, forget everything that was done in the 80's and early 90's, and you can still see some crappy movies made about the things we love ("grind", which I refused to watch, or out cold, etc, etc....however, I do have a soft spot for "gleaming the cube", so sue me:) Gads, and don't even mention that wakeboarding movie that's going to be made. This is what happens when uninformed people see something marketable and want to make a buck off of it. I can't speak on the intentions of the journalist that worked with grubb...they may have been legitimately interested in wakeskating, but just don't really get it since they aren't involved in the culture.

Anyway, misrepresentation isnt' anything new. If you're upset, try to do half of what brian has done to promote wakeskating and you'll be doing everyone a major service.

Spicoli, wakeskating is his job and because it is his job, grubb is trying to make the most amount of money possible to secure his future. There is absolutely nothing wrong with appearing in the magazine because it has the potential to get hyperlites name out to some people who might not know about them, malibu, redbull...If anything, it was a good move on Grubb's part, and what do you have to worry, if you are throwing down on a skate then who cares if some newbies hop on one and look like idiots, how does that effect your riding? Plenty of surfers and snowboarders have done similary things, and those to sports are going no where but up.

Spicoli,

Were there just pictures of Grubb or him and other skates? They took some pics of me at Odub, they were only letting the wakeskaters ride, and the guy said they were taking pictures for that Mens Fitness magazine. Maybe Grubb went a little bigger than me off the kicker... but oh well. Laughing
