|
|
I have an 18 foot 190 HP I/O boat. I was just wondering if the standard of 60% in the rear 40% in the front holds true for an I/O. It seems it would not since there is naturally more weight in the rear with an I/O vs an inboard. Anyone else have a similar boat that they have set up a pretty good wake? Right now I just have a 600 lb bag that seems to do the best in the back, but I am wondering if it would help to add some weight up front.
The attached pics have the bag in the middle (ski locker) with 4 adults in the boat.

As long as you can get it on plane quick enough and don't have any speed holding issues I wouldn't worry about it.More weight in the front will make the wake rampier.
More weight back= steeper
More weight forward= rampier

usually you want that 60-40 ratio flipped but it requires some experimenting sometimes.

Totally,
Generally in I/O's more weight forward works well.. but it seems to vary alot!
I always found it was mor elike 70% forward... 30% back aft
I used to run an 18ft Maxum with the same engine as you (4.3 carb'd merc?)
and really one sack plus some people really used to make it struggle.
I'd go with 2 fat buddies (300lb's) and move them around... you may have trouble getting it up on plane though.
Two things may help you - high five prop if you haven't got one already and a foil plate on the out drive.
Looks like a pretty nice wake for an 18ft'r though!

I have an 19' Regal with a 4.3 the wake is best with 600 in the locker and 250 on each side of the engine. The second best is the 250's next to the engine without 600 on the locker.

I have an 18 ft. I/O as well with the Volvo Penta 4.3 V6 190 HP engine. I have found through my various testing that a 450 lb. fat sack in the bow walk thru works best for my boat. I have even tried putting dual 100 lb fat sacks on either side of the engine and it just made the wake smaller. Experimenting is the key though because each I/O V Hull ride quite a bit different. With the 450 lb. fat sack and 4-5 people in the boat the wake gets quite a bit bigger then the one you have pictured. I will try to see if I can find a pic of it to post for you.

The bow is probably the only place I haven't tried to put the weight at. I guess I will try that next. Thanks.

I take it you guys go beyond what your boat manufacture recommends. I figured that.

I have an 18.5 ft. Monterey I/O with a 4.3 liter 190 hp- and I put 720 lbs in the bow, as well as 750 lbs in the middle. Put the trim up a bit- maybe a third or so, and you are all set. And yes, the legal weight limit of the boat is 1190 lbs, so you kind of have to be careful about sinkin it. The good thing is that the rangers at my lake don't care whatsoever- they see me filling them up, and tell me how cool they think the fat sacs are- so everyone is happy.

Im going to put 600 in the bow and like 300 or 400 in the locker but the cops on my lake are so dangerous they almost ran my friend over they were literally 10 feet away going bout 30 mph when he was in the water fu** the police.

I think I will get a couple more fat sacs. Right now all I have is the 600 lb'r, and based on these posts, the best wake is from moving the weight as far forwad as I can (in the bow). It also helps so I can go full up trim and the boat wont popoise.

How important is it that the sac meet the dimensions of my ski locker? I was going to buy a "locker specific" sac but I am wondering if I should just buy a 600lb fat buddy and use that instead.

Mine is a locker sac, but it is actually a little big for the locker. I can get about 500lbs in it in the locker, but if I put it on the seats in the bow I can fill it fully.
