Start off by doing butterslides at the top of the wake. As you come up onto the wake nice and slow lean back and kick your rear fin loose and push your back foot forward so that the board is sliding sideways on the wake. You should kinda look like a surfer trying to cut real hard off the lip. You have to be pretty aggressive when you push your back foot or the fin won't break free. Once you get to where the board is riding sideways you can choose which foot you want out front by pushing again on that leg. If you're still having trouble try slowing the boat down to where you can just barely stay on a plane. Also you might try removing your fins altogether. Just remember to lean back and you'll be fine.

Another surface 180 question:

I can do surface 180s but every now and then I go for a face plant. For those of you who are good riders, can you do surface 180s outside of the wake when the boat is going in a straight line at regular riding speed? I only seem to be able to do it when the boat is turning; i go on the inside of the turn (where the line tension is low) and that's where I'm able to do it. Same goes for surface 360s, I can only do it when I'm on the inside of a turn- Can you do it when the boat is going straight?

I'm asking this because I don't know anyone else who wakeboards and I'm not sure whether this sort of stuff is do-able or whether surface 180s and 360s are limited to certain conditions in line tension.

Its much easier to do suface spins when the boat is going slower. If the boat is going slower, the fins break out of the water much easier.

it's also a lot easier going finless -- much more of a loose ride -- but less face plants. Depending on your setup -- a deeper fin is meant to track/hold -- the moment that gets sideways -- it can create some major resistance and thus, you end up on your face.

Yes, you can do surface 180's when the boat is going straight at regular speed. You just need to keep you feet out in front of your hips, and keep the handle at your hips. Pull the handle to your back hip and make the turn.
