I tried a backroll the other day and totally messed up, I cut in hella hard and had as much tension as I could muster up, when I got into the air and hucked the backroll it seemed like the tension pulled me out of the rotation, I ended up getting about 1/3 of the way around and landing on my head/stomach.
I got plenty of air to do the trick and bailed in the flats, so I should have had time to get the rotation done if I had done it right.... any tips for my next attempt?

You shouldn't be hucking the backroll in the air.

Keep the handle in at your lead hip.

First of all you don't need a hard cut at all. Just cut in enough to go w2w or a bit further. This trick is not a trick you huck. As you cut up the wake look over your lead shoulder and rock onto your back foot. This motion will make your board cut up and away and will start your rotation. If the handle is in close you will rotate fast, if it is out you will rotate slower.

I'm in the middle of dialing in my backrolls too at the moment. What really helped me was taking some pictures of my attempts. From those, I was able to figure out that I was coming off my edge thus not getting enough air. Before that, I found out that I was letting go with my front hand which is completely wrong. So, if you have a digital camera available, try getting some shots of your attempts. Post them here and I'm sure people will be able to help diagnose your issues.

I think control is important too. Don't cut hard for all your worth only to end up totally out of control by the time you get to the wake. Start easy and build your edge going in. It's pretty easy to get the rotation started. Make sure you wait for the pop first. Then, just look over your lead should and kinda coax your legs up and away from the boat.

Hope that helps.

I'm thinking about trying a backroll as my first invert..... I can get wake to wake and into the flats like everytime. This is my second year wakeboarding. It sounds like if you keep your hands down look over your lead sholder and get your legs out behind you it will do the rotation its self... any help would be awesome!

I'm still in the process of refining my backroll also.

You don't need to huck this flip it should be natural and a slow rotation. If you huck the flip you are going to land on your head b/c u will throw the flip too early or you will rotate extremely fast which is dangerous or you might over-rotate.

To do this trick take a progressive edge into the wake and absorb the pop. When you launch off of the wake rock a little bit of weight onto your back foot and this will carry you through the rotation. Don't forget about the handle either, keep it in by your hip to rotate faster and let it out if you are rotating too fast. You NEED to keep constant tension on the rope and it will pull you through the flip, if you don't have constant tension you won't be able to land the trick.

Here's a clip of me...Click on I can't figure this out...Tantrum Help. It has a clip of me doing the tantrum completely wrong then 2 backrolls. Hope this helps. Let me know when you land it too!!
