Job Hunting Question...

I'm commited to coaching a team through November. I would like to make a move towards my career. Due to the coaching there are a few fridays I'll need off for tournaments as well as some days I'd need to take off by 3pm. Will employers still give me a look or is it better to wait until November?

I guess it can never hurt to ask...

Speaking as an employeer, I like hiring people that have outside interests. Work should not be an employees sole interest. Many problems are solved by experiences outside of work.

I'd hit the pavement now, I think it will only help.

Coaching teaches good leadership skills. As long as your other comittments do not impact the business, I would think an employer would only want to encourage leadership training in any form possible.

as long as your up front w/ your future employer, there shouldn't be a problem. i'm sure they'll ask something like, "do you have anything going on that could prevent you from working full time?" then you put everything on the table. if they want you, they'll look past it. if they can't look past it, find another company to work for. as stated by jklein, coaching teaches good leadership skills.

You should talk to the your prospective employers and let them know your situation. But from what I've seen in the Big corporate world is that you're just another body.
Being that Nov. is pretty late in the year, most people will hire you for the beginning of the year. It's tough to train new people during the Holidays.

I think everyone has a good point here. If your potential employer can't look past your commitments, then I'd be worried. I would be upfront with them though and say that you have previous commitments that will effect you at XXX times, etc. I wouldn't tell them until the process gets more serious though. Telling someone upfront that for the next couple of months, you are only 80% committed to your job might not be so good until they show some serious interest in you.
Dragonlady has a great point too though - getting hired in the 4th Q. is very tough! Most companies are trying to wrap things up for the year so hiring isn't a big deal to them. At the same time though, get started now! Its a long process.

FYI... I'm looking at jobs that are political in nature. Legislative Analyst or something of that nature. My main focus is getting on as a staffer for a legislature in the State Govt. Arnold office wouldn't be bad either. Good heads up on the 4th quarter advice.
