Hi! I've only wakeboarded twice but I love it!!! I've gotten up and I've crossed the wake, but I dont know where to go from there. What is the easiest trick for a beginner like me to learn?

It might be helpful for you to know that I have a hyperlite 128 wakeboard...our boat is a kinda old chris craft so it definitely isn't set up for wakeboarding. It doesn't have a tower or anything like that. I'm just wondering how much I can accomplish! Thanks! Smile

Before learning tricks get used to riding switch. Once you can ride switch pretty easy try some surface tricks like a surface 180, etc. Then work on your HS and TS wake to wake jumps in both regular and switch. Once you've got your w2w jumps down really well start learning some grabs and then move on from there...

Read these articles about HS and TS Progressive Edging. It will help you with your wake to wake jumps.

wkbrdlvr, set an even stance and then swith your feet around once you get up to go switch. Try touching the water, riding one handed, butterslides, stuff like that. Keep all the tricks on the water at first.

Get used to ollieing, try and ollie some buoys. Start doing one wake jumps and doing grabs. I wouldn't start riding switch until youre competent riding regular.

Yeah, don't go switch yet. Just ollie. Then cut slowly into the wake to get a little air....work your progression up and remember to work on that cut. Don't grab until you can be comfortable getting some air.

No binding adjustments.

When your board is in neutral and feels lose, do a surface 180. If successful, you will be riding switch (backwards from your normal position). I don’t get up in switch; I simply do a 180 once I am up.

how exactly do you go about doing a "switch" is it on the water or in a jump ? When i was riding i was thinking about trying it but it seemed the edge of the board would catch some water trying to turn it resulting in the face plant .....WHICH i do not need more of after my broke nose from the skiing.

Either.

It also depends on your board, board size and your weight on how easy it is. Boards with single fins or running finless will be the easiest to do surface tricks on, but also the most prone to slipping out on unbalanced landings. If your board is undersized and you are pushing a lot of water and/or are traveling to slow, it will be very difficult.

The best time for me to do a surface 180 on my board is between edgings. Example: If I heal edge hard out side of the wake to increase speed, and just before I lean back inside on a toe edge, I can feel the board hit neutral (completely centered and weight balanced). The fins will be nearly too completely free from the water because you should be riding high upon the plane due to the increased speed. I use only one hand (same as the current front foot) and switch hands and rotate at the same time. You can rotate in either direction, it’s your choice. If you get this down, try one in the air. Watch your balance. Too much weight in the rear will keep your fins in the water.

You can play around and test neutral by attempting to slightly rotate as if going into a slide. If the board is resistant, you are obviously not ready. If the board starts into a slide at 45-90 degrees with little resistance, go ahead and complete the 180.

Switch is just turnin the board while balanced on the center of the board. To do this just manuever to your heel side flat, shift weight to center of board, now rotate at the hips so board is perpendicular to the direction the water is goin. At this point, you wanna point your toes straight out so your ankle is straight.

Once you do this, come back and tell me how it goes! Rolling Eyes

without cutting out or anything, note what foot is in front. switch would be doing the same thing with the other foot in front. it's not a trick or a maneuver, its just something you need to be able to do unless you're able to do all 360's or 720's Razz

but say you catch air and rotate only 180 degress, that's half a full rotation so your other foot will be in front. it's hard to ride that way without practice, and even harder to land a trick without knowing how to ride switch.

but my advice is to work on getting one wake jumps down...if you get frustrated with it, take a break try some handle passes, slides, etc or work on your edging.
