| Ok, here's the deal. I think my whole family is coming out on the water with me and my friends this weekend including my 14 year old brother. I'm going to try and teach him how to wakeboard but I have a question first. I have an o'brien oasis 142, my friend has an o'brien custom 142, and we also have a cheap $40 hydroslide we bought to learn with at dick's sporting goods. He only weighs about 80-85 pounds, very little guy. Would it be a good idea to let him try with my board or the hydroslide. The hydroslide is a little smaller board but there is a huge difference in stability, my oasis being the most stable in my opinion. OR should I just get him to buy a smaller board for himself before he tries it? Thanks. |

He can probally learn on your board if you move the bindings in to suit him. If he gets hooked then he will definitly want to get his on board. _________________ "Don't wait for 6 strong men to take you to church."

He wont hurt your board if he falls, i just got my board last week and ive been out 4 times with it and have let someone new try it everytime. _________________ http://www.myspace.com/wannabess

Once he gets up and starts riding for the first time, he'll probably do what I did (as well as many others on this site did) and go out and get his own board right away... _________________

Well, it's been a while since I've updated on this...but my brother did get up on my board but the farthest he could ever go was like 10 yards I ran out of patience because I told him everything in detail what he was doing wrong and how to fix it. Should've had more patience but I didn't. He could get up fairly easy but instead of staying low while he got his balance, as soon as his board popped out of the water he stood straight up and one of 3 things would happen.
1.) He would get alot of slack in the rope, pull the rope, and fall backwards.
2.) He would get up, turn the board and stand up completely straight all within a period of 3 seconds and fall to one side.
3.) Stand up way too early and the board would burry up and he would fall forward.
I told him time, and time, and time, and time again stand up slow and don't stand up all the way until you can balance better. Oh well, maybe he'll get it before the season is over.
And no, I wasn't exaggerating on his weight, he's 14 years old, 5'1" and 85-90 pounds. He's literally all skin and bones, I keep poking fun at him for it hoping he'll get the message and actually start eating more but it hasn't seemed to help Oh well. |

hey,
I just haev a few suggestions which may help, may not ... but whatevs
He is able to get up but not stay up ... maybe he is riding on his weaker side?? I have seen a few new people struggle to stay up riding one way, then try to ride the other way ... and it ends up working out. Especially if he has never done any boardsports before, there is a 50/50 chance that he'll choose his stronger side to start with.
Also, it may have to do with the size of your board. A 142 is huge for such a small guy ... some of my guy friends are 5'8 175pds and they ride a 138 or 140... it will probably provide some stability as it is bigger, but it would be very hard to maneouver and control... so that may also have something to do with it |

| Nah, it wasn't an issue on getting up on his weak side....he tried both ways several times. It wasn't really a maneuverability issue either, it was more of a "I'm up!!....I'm down." thing, lol. He never really lasted long enough to try to maneuver the board. He's just never done any kind of watersports, boardsports, or basically anything to do with balance...not even roller skating that I know of. He'll get it eventually, I bought a skateboard to help me during the offseason and I'm gonna let him ride it some to get his board balance. |
