depends on what level you are competiting in. it goes by skill level, not necesarily by age. _________________ www.liquidforce.com |

Determination, you can check out www.intleague.com for a rundown of tournaments and skill levels. Generally novice is for people who have only been riding a very short time, touching the water, lipslides, one wake jumps, etc. Intermediate level is like two wake jumps, grabs, some 180s and maybe one invert. Advanced is all of the above plus 360s, a few more inverts. Expert is again all of the above and generally 5 inverts or less. Outlaw is unlimited inverts and spins. Those are the divisions for the INT league, other tournaments may differ, but usually are pretty close to that. Hope that helps.

Determination, where in PA do you live? My family lives in Greensburg, I live in Pittsburgh right now, and I am living on Deep Creek Lake in MD this summer. I know of the Bust Largest Wakeboard Comp by High Mountain Sports on Deep Creek Lake, and I think there is one on Cheat Lake in WV, each are about 2.5 hours from Pittsburgh. As far as the riding goes, The BLWC goes by age groups (atleast they did two years ago) and with a few spins (180s, 360s) an invert (backroll, tantrum) and a few big grabs, as well as hitting the double up, you can easily place top 5. You can check out a few pictures from the comp at:
http://www.highmountainsports.com/2002_bustlargness.htm
The kid doing the raley and roll is EJ Scotfield, he usually wins every year, but then again he rides for Hyperlite and has competed on the Triple Crown once or twice. There are some more pictures of other riders on this page:
http://www.highmountainsports.com/cool_stuff.htm
so you can see where you would fit in.

1st- Age really doesn't matter unless the event has a grom class(under 12), or a masters division(over 30)
Beginners Class-No inverts:
Most people that place(1st -3rd) in the local grassroots amatuer beginner classes tourneys are the ones that don't fall down. Do whatever tricks you can and but make it through the course. Your total points will add up.
In my 2nd event I placed 3rd, not because I was the 3rd best boarder, I placed because I did not fall down and did enough tricks to score better. Falling down takes about 1/3 of the course to get back up on plane. You lose alot of point scoring time. Most beginners try to do more than they are ready for and fall too soon.
Another thing to remember, you will be riding behind a boat with a huge wake that you are not used to, it will probably be cold, and about 9:30 in the morning. In my 1st tourney, we rode behind a X-Star. I had never ridden behind a true "wakeboard" boat. The wake looked like a tidal wave. My 1st jump was a major crash. I didn't make one pass before I fell twice and was done. The next tourney, I was better prepared and told myself to be patient and don't try any bigger tricks until I rode a bit and got used to the wake. It paid off with some cool prizes and a 1/64 replica of a Malibu Wakesetter. Wow.
Intermediate class is the same-don't fall. There are more points for the inverts you can do.
My advice:
Enter the contest no matter what your ability. It is loads of fun.
PS
I am 44 yrs young. At 17 you should be able to go huge(and make some good crashes for the spectators). |
