I hear that we just rolled through Baghdad with only a few incidents of resistance. I guess this means that most of the war is over? There are some good pictures of a statue of Saddam being toppled over.
Someone should tell those Iraqis about Ebay. How much would a piece of that statue bring?
Now we have to clean up, and hope that some sort of stable government, which is not just as fanatic as the last, can come in and do the job. What the hell do we do now? How do you even start the job of attempting to install a democracy in a region full of people who hate democracy? Because if another dictator takes controll, we're back where we started from. But on the other hand, we don't want to be stuck there ruling the country ourselves either.......

Big problem is the people who will try to "play nice" to get into power and then once we're gone abuse it. That's how some of these asses got in charge in the first place. At least this time we don't have to choose the lesser of two evils...

What all have we taken control of today? Last I knew we had Baghdad International Airport & a Military Airport. I was flipping channels this morning & heard something about at the military airport they found blood-stained U.S. military clothing... I think I heard it on the Centcom briefing.

It's far from over CB. You may be jumping the gun a bit here.
We've been cleaning up. I do not understand your obsession with this war.
We'll take care of things. Hopefully, we learned a lesson from McArthur. That's about the only country we rebuilt that is friendly to us now. It only took 20+ years.

There's still a lot of things to be settled. Like getting POW's back and all that. Parts of Baghdad are revolting against Saddam's control. That's where the reports are coming from, but I heard there is still fighting about a mile from where the statue was toppled. Certain military offices were looted by the public and the Iraqi Information Minister finally stopped going to work today. Things are starting to look up as far as the Iraqi's feeling a sense of freedom from Saddam's Regime. But the Military still need to gain complete control and arrest/capture certain military leader and Saddam and/or his sons.

| There are still pockets of resistance in the smaller towns, we are steamrolling through any resistance that pops up in some towns btwn Basra and Baghdad right now. But taking power in Baghdad is obviously the decisive point of the war, it means the regime is no longer present and in power.

It's the whole theory that's been used in France. Once your troops roll through Paris the country is yours.

its a long way from over.
im still amazed that once the iraqi soldiers surrender, all we do is take their guns and then send them off back to their home again. does anyone else find this odd?

Aubs- Many Iraqi soldiers don't want to fight. They aren't loyal to Saddam's Regime. Once we take the Officers captive, there is nothing to hold these soldiers to Saddam's Regime.

What else are you going to do with them? Spend money and resources to keep them in a camp, where you have to feed them? I think if we just send them home, we make a statement that we aren't the monsters they probably have been told we are, and more Iraqis become more likely to surrender, especially when they know it just means that they get to go home and take a nap.
I haven't heard any reports of us having to fight the same guys twice, so apparently they just go home and don't fight anymore.
