System install for '83 2001 FINISHED...for now!

Anyone have any ideas of where to mount a sub (12") in an old 2001? I have looked and under the bow looks like the best. Was hoping that someone would post some pics of the finished product. It looks like it would be an oddly shaped box. I plan on mounting the amp and HU in front behind the footrest.

Any ideas? Pics?

There are lots of ways of doing this but remember that you dont need a ton of bass if the sub is goin under the bow. I feel like the bow actually enhances the bass to the point that it may be too much for anything more than a 100 watt 10 inch sub.

I put a round subwoofer tube/encosure waaay up under the bow, and ratchet strapped it to the threaded bolt that comes down below the front lifting ring. That took some contortionist maneuvers to get it (and me) way up under there but it paid off.

The result is that the woofer is up and away from the storage space. Basically you'll want to crawl in there and have them hand you the sub and jockey it in there. I used a 10 inch sub powered by an Alpine subwoofer amp.

I just finished the stereo install on my Malibu -- I'll post pics probably tomorrow -- I put a 10" sub in -- in an enclosure...2 amps, capacitor, 6 speakers...

If it is the Malibi V-Ride in your profile then little information on your install will be relevant. Open bow vs small closed bow situations are quite dissimilar.

I have a MC PS 190 and I custom built a box for a 10" for right in front of the drivers feet. Works awesome. Basically a 1' cube with one extra side to account for the slope of the hull.

BTW - made out of MDF and cheap indoor/outdoor carpet from home depot. Gotta make sure it is 100% air tight though. Had to pull it out and reinstall the speaker b/c it was farting.

Thanks for the posts...those look great. I am going to put the existing sub and amp from my previous ride in there. 12" Punch HX2, and ol'school RF punch power 500W amp. Mucho bass. I love making the water rattle! and making it sound like the boat is about to fall apart.

I think I figured out a liable location for the sub. Using the existing box, I can mount it to the floor, and then make some baffles walls to finish it out. The walls will serve to hide all the crap under the bow as well as make a place to mount the amps and head unit.

Check out the pics. Don't dog on my mad MS Paint skillz. I don't have Solidworks loaded on this PC, but you get the idea.

Any suggestions or thoughts or similar installs?

bmh2208, as long as you make it hot pink and neon green, it will work perfectly. Otherwise, you may want to rethink your design.

Here is what I did tonight after work in a couple of hours. I still have to cover it in carpet. Now all I have to do is run the wires and I got some serious bump going on in the ride. Oh yeah...I need some highs too.

Any ideas of where to mount the highs short of cutting holes in the gunnels?

i hope the sub box isn't made out of plywood. Resin coated MDF or Plexi is a must. I like the baffles though. Why didn't you mount the head unit on the front panel of the dash board?

Yeah the sub is only 3/4" plywood. It worked great for me in the past. I'm not too worried about rot and absorbtion. I will be redoing it all after the season when I redo the carpet. Kinda a temporary thing. As far a sound goes, 3/4" plywood is almost as good a s MDF (my choice), but didn't have any laying around. I did a science fair project back in middle school testing the effects of different woods with boxes. We tested about 5 different scenarios (woods/composites) and the plywood held up pretty well. I usually store the boat under a cover or in the garage, so hopefully it will last till the end of the summer.

I really wasn't wanting to cut into the dashboard, eventhough there was a perfect spot which was begging for a HU. I have a remote, so I shouldn't have to jack with the radio down there much.

Too bad all the added weight is on the wrong side....I am goofy-footed, but my buds will glady accept as I am the only one that rides that way.

Here is what I ended up doing about the highs. There are some simple 2 sides baffles that house one 5.5" Ratshack, and a 4"x6" Fultron 2-way. It is hard to see in the pics but the 5.5's face the front and the 4x6's face the rear.

Is it ghetto looking? Probably! Am I trying to win any install contests with this? Not even close (albeit would be a close race with Unique Whips). WIll it work and sound alright? Should. Will I probably do something different at the end of the season when I redo the carpet? Most definately, but for the meantime, with the supplies and materials I had lying around, this will suffice for 99% of us. I didn't have any black paint to paint the white RS speakers, but that will come.

I finished everything up tonight. Sounds pretty good. I definately need to get a couple more highs to compensate for all the bass. In hindesight it probably wasn't the best idea to secure the baffle holding the radio to the sub box. When I crank it up, every low note will cause the CD to skip. No biggie, I will hook up the Ipod via FM transmitter or just listen to the local stations.
