it isn't going to help at all. the problem is the boat not the tower. just hook the rope to the downriggers.

A boston whaler makes a washy, wide, small wake. So the real problem is the hull.

boston whaler is a fishing boat, do you plan on doing alot of fishing?? by design the hull on that boat will not create a wakeboard freindly wake.

I had a 17' with and 85 "many years ago" and I loved it, a well-built boat.

The 17' Montauk has one of three different hull designs depending on when it was built (what year is yours?). The newest ones are most like a V-hull, the older ones are similar to a tri-hull and the really old ones are basically a tri-hull if you look at the transom. So . . . the first thing is that because of the shape of the hull the boat will never throw a crisp wake. The older the hull - the bigger the problem.

I don’t see how you could mount a tower or pylon? Because the Whaler is a "closed sandwich" instead of a hull & deck design, you will have to thru-bolt the tower bases through the side of the boat (yuck). A pylon may work but I still don’t know how you would bolt the side braces (rear legs) without it being real ugly when you’re done.

The best option may be the "Swivel-eze" type ski pylon. Everything attaches and the transon and on the motor well. A buddy of my put on of those on a 15' whaler to drag kids around on kneeboard and tubes and worked good. You can find these on eBay pretty reasonable.

If you do put a tower or pylon on it please post pics on how you did it.

Bill
(That's my opinion but I could be wrong)

bill its a 91 with a 100 hp, i was wondering how i would mount the tower or pylon to, i realy have no clue for the tower, but the plylon would be doable i think, just mount the legs to the transom like you would a swivel eze, it take up so much room in the back though, idk anyone have any ideas?

Jeff,

The reason I don't think a tower is an option is because you cant get "underneath" the deck to put a backing plate and the nuts. See http://users.overland.net/~moose/flyer13.jpg because you would need at least the backing plate, bolts and nuts sticking outside your boat - that's the big YUCK.

Check out the big air pylon at http://www.bigairpylons.com/PylonMorePics.htm and it may work because it uses all cables, but walking around the boat becomes a real thrill with any cables. Now compare that to the universal pylon at http://www.joystickpylons.com/ and you'll see rear legs - these are the problem because their is no easy way to bolt these onto a whaler. So my $0.02 is the big air may work but imagine moving around your boat with all those cables.

Now check out the Ski Pylon at http://www.overtons.com/graphics/products/medium/13437M.jpg which is Overton’s part number 13437, adjusts to 52" high and cost $180. This is your best bet for a few reasons. Mounting a pylon or tower will be a major nightmare on a Whaler and what you end up you will probably not like (I have some "heroic" ideas you could pull off but is it worth it???). You will also devastate the value of your boat. There is not one Boston Whaler with a wakeboard tower for sale today at www.BoatTraderOnline.com.

If you do want a tower, we make quite a sweet one (www.MonsterTower.com) but I really feel the ski tow mentioned above is the right product for your boat.

That's my opinion but I could be wrong.

Bill

Jeff,

I went with Sony XPlod Amp, Sub and 6x9's (el-cheapo Walmart / eBay specials) and it's plenty enough to maintain the lake cop's attention. That's like a political question, search the reviews. Fellow riders have done some incredible stuff with the tunes in their boat.

Now if I could sell a tower to every 17' Whaler owner I'd be sportin a new wakesetter, X-star or SAN with tune's I'd want to brag about Cool

Remember you have a console and everything has to fit in there. Ski boats and run about have lots of space under the driver and passengers feet, as well as bow and aft seeting to put stuff. Not much room in a 17" Montauk Center Console for toyz.

Poston,

Sorry about the shameless self promotion and pitty cry, actually I'm the one on the far right and my better half is the one on the far left, our three boyz are between the bookends & all love to ride. The one in the middle (Kevin) is our shipping manager so if you order and we send it to the wrong place you know who to blame.

Bill
