Only time I go to the mountains is in the dead of Winter so I have no idea on this.
I was wondering what is up with the April closures when there is still 100-150" bases at some resorts??? (eg: Cali, Utah).

Is it just a matter of it being not profitable enough to run operations this late in the season?? (eg: not enough visitors/tourists there buying those day tickets)
Or are conditions that bad with the higher temps???

When it gets warm people lose interest, their "winter" activity season is over so they move on. It sucks for those that would still ride, but when it's not profitable to operate it's not the best decision to do so. Especially when you're dependent on Ma Nature for future seasons.

Squaw is operating through Memorial Day weekend. Wink

Other than that, pretty much what jryoung said. I got about 30 days in this year, and my knees were fried, so I stopped and geared up for the summer season.

I can honestly say that this was either the best season I have ever had or pretty damn close to it. I feel that I went out on top, and am perfectly happy with it! Mr. Green

I don't know about California and Utah, but in Colorado the moutains have to close by a certain date becuase the resort land is leased from the National Forest Service. From what I understand, by Contract the resorts can only make money off the land over a certain time frame in the year; hence they have to close when there is plenty of snow on the mountians.

A combination of loss of interest and there is a almost extinct animal that lives on our mountain so we have to slose for that and whatbillyjodonjimbob, said.

Yup I know Sierra closed due to its land leasing problem. I rode their the last weekend it was open and can safely say that the conditions sucked. It was like riding in oatmeal, lean to far forward and you could tuck the nose of your board right into the snow(Super slow too). The park crew had a horrrid job trying to keep up with the ever falling apart run ins and hits, my hats off to them, they did a great job with what they had to work with.

To add insult to injury, some resorts reported that they got 9 inches since yesterday, with snow still coming down.... Laughing

another big reason they close now is because all the workers leave. all the lifties and lodge workers, etc. are only contracted through a certain time. and in tahoe the majority of the workers are form australia or brazil or somewhere else in the southern hemeshpere and they go home to enjoy their own winters. so there is no one to work at resort. the only two places in tahoe that are staying open past around this weekend are alpine and squaw.

In UT it's all about the $$. We closed down on April 15th, from April 10-15th we lost money every day. When all the tourists leave town, it's just season pass holders up on the hill. It costs something like $5000 just to run our Gondola. The PC reosrts could stay open as long as they wanted.

Snowbird is still open and they still have a ton of snow! They'll probably get another foot or so out of this current storm. I think I'm going to have to hit it a few more times. In the next week or so they are only going to be open on weekends.

Yeah, for some peeps. I'm over snowboarding now and am in wakeboard mode though. They do a bit of filming up there around this time. Chad's Gap is up at Grizzley Gulch too, Grizzley is right above Alta.

what pisses me off is that this year the mountain closed - but usually the park guys leave up the park until the snow is GONE like 100% and we can hit the jumps for a month after closing with like 3' wide ramps of snow, but this year managment made them take down all the rails and flatten the jumps on the last day for liabality reasons

we have to close every year on April 11th or so, no matter the snow conditions, because we are owned by the forest park service, and we cant open until november 20th or so again
