I've been thinking for a while now that it would be really cool to have a nice scenic lake photo (glass of course) that was high quality in a frame that you could hang in your living room. But it would have in the background someone wakeboarding, maybe throwing an invert or something. Not huge and gaudy, something classy. I doubt anything like this exists but I thought about trying to find or take a picture and have it printed on a canvas and then use some paints to put brush strokes on it or just get it printed on a high quality matte that would go in a frame.

Anyone have tips or thoughts about doing this? I know there are some great photographers here. You guys ever thought about this before?

Brad- If you found or took a digital photo, you could photoshop it a little to add some brush strokes a lot easier than having to brush them by hand.
Also a friend of mine at work has a printer that will print out on a 13" wide canvas roll, so if you found something we might be able to do some tests. How big do you want it?

89 skier, I was thinking like painting sized.. Something to take up a good portion of a wall. A panoramic 13" tall 3'-4' wide photo would be really cool.

I know I could do brush strokes on photoshop but the reason I would want the brush strokes is because of the texture. It would look like it's an actual painting, not a photograph. From my understanding that's how they do most of the fabricated paintings. They print on a canvas and then just apply brush strokes on top. I wouldn't brush the whole thing, just certain parts. It would still be a lot of work though. I think it would be cool with just the picture even if it didn't have brush strokes though.

If someone has a picture like this in really high quality I'd love to give it a try. I don't have the camera to handle something like this.

Yeah, there's several places that sell prints on canvas and they look like the real thing but they are actually silk-screened on. You don't get the texture that you would with a palette knife on canvas but they still look great on a gallery-wrapped (1.5" thick) canvas.

There's some guy on Wakeworld that was painting wake pics. He was talking about them a while ago.. If you do a search you can probably find the thread.

I have been thinking about this for a while too. I thought a large siloutte pic of a SANTE on a lake at dusk(obvously mostly lake with like 20 percent boat/rider) with the rider putting his boots on the back platform would look sick(only boat driver in boat). All black, reds, oranges, and yellows. Inspirational basically.

One of the best ways to do this is to use an old(er) artist's trick.

Take a pic using slide film. Once developed, using a slide projector, project the image onto a canvas.

With this image, you can trace major and minor outlines onto the canvas.

With the outlines, it basically becomes a kind of paint by numbers gig. Paint as you wish, using the color slide as a reference for the color of hte paints.

Piece of cake.

That sounds really cool. If I can find a picture to use I might contact your friend about trying to print it on that 13" sheet. Do you think he could do 3-4' in width?

Liquidmx, that would be a great pic to use also. Just a little bit of sunset with a very dark SANTE. Very chill.

itch, I'll PM him. I wonder if he has a softcopy image so I can see what it looks like.

Here's one I made for my website. It's a digital illustration, made from several royalty-free photographs. The sky is one photo, the water is a different photo and the boat is a separate photo too. The other elements I created myself and added in with Adobe Illustrator and photoshop.
Not living room material, but I thought I'd share it anyway.

All those would be perfect for slide projection.

Great contrast and Silhouette.

You don't need it on artist canvas though. It's an awefully tough material to print on.

A 600 thread count cotton cloth would be good though. Make sure you wash it and dry it as hot as you can before printing. Then stretch it onj the frame, spray an artist's canvas sealer on it ( magic white, diluted ), then print.
