Just wanted to get a few opinions before I go shopping for a desktop package for my folks.

They don't need anything fancy, just to be used for email, internet, picture storage, printing, Microsoft XP, disc burning, etc, etc.

Just a relatively inexpensive reliable machine that's user friendly.

Any thoughts?

Dell has some great deals that you just can't beat with a stick. If you want a laptop though I have an HP and I have loved it

i have a powerspec, which is just the desktop line for winbook. i've had it since oct '03 and only had two BSODs, one from spyware, and the other because i accidentally tried to open like four dozen 50MB tiff files at once.

if you're going for straight low cost, i'd find a refurbished dell system off ebay.

EDIT: check out fatwallet.com for deals on dell. my friend got an "SC420 PowerEdge server with a 2.5GHz Celeron, 256MB of DDR2 RAM, and a 160GB SATA drive for $280 shipped."

if they just need it for the basics, go for a cheap dell. You can get a warranty (unlike a refurbished system) and they are cheap as crap. Sign up on the dell website and they will start sending you emails for their deals. My dad just looked at a low end model for under 500.

Thanks guys.

I have dell at home and have been happy with it. My laptop is HP...haven't used my home desktop in months! Laughing

This one was for my parents and ended up getting the Dimension 8400 with a 17" flatscreen, photo printer and some other goodies. Showed up here in 2 days.

Now I just have get to their house, hook it up and teach 'em how to not break it Rolling Eyes
