I bought an 01 Xterra with the 3.3 V6. Max tow capacity is 5K. I think that will manage my boat, but has anyone else towed with a similar rig? _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Towed the SAN about 40 miles round trip with an '01 Xterra not too long ago. I was surprised how well it accelerated, and more importantly, stopped 4,500 lbs behind it. You'll be 100% A-O.K. if you stay away from any mega-steep launch ramps. |

Thank you very much, that's reassuring.
How did you come to the 4500 figure? My boat weighs 2900 lbs dry, I wonder how much weight the trailer adds..... _________________ I walk 47 miles of barb wire, I got a cobra snake for a necktie, a brand new house up on the road side, and it's made out of rattlesnake hide |

Well, I figured 3,200 Super Sport, a few hundred for the tower/speakers/random crap, and about a grand for the trailer. |

Don't forget about the tires you have on your tow rig. They can make or break you on a ramp. I've been on ramps with no problem in my V6 Explorer and then I go to a different ramp that longer and steeper and couldn't get up it without putting 3 people on my rear bumper to get better traction. Michelin tires last an extremely long time (currently 81,000+ miles) but they are a hard rubber tire and can get slick on wet pavement.
So be mindful of your tires as well as the power of the tow rig. _________________ So, I've got that goin' for me...which is nice! |

Couldn't get up the ramp? 4wd? Our boat ramp was pretty steep and even when i had a 1989 crown victoria with classic grandma whitewalls, I was easy on the throttle and even when wet on our very crappy steep ramp it pulled it out. |

We have a rig similar to the XTerra. We use our V6 Escape (4wd) for towing and it works out fine so far (knock on wood). We put it in 4wd when pulling the boat out of the water and it does great. It accelerates really well for only being a V6. I'm actually more worried about the suspension than anything as I think the Escape is built on a car (Taurus) frame. |

as my brothers tahoe's aren't always available, two summers ago i put a hidden hitch on my volvo s60 and towed the sportstar 2 blocks from my parents beachhouse to the ramp...now that was a laugh.
actually worked fine, the ramp isn't very steep and the car is pretty powerful (although I think the transmission would die after another block or so). Only problem i had was a dumb ex girlfriend climbing on the roof while the boat was straining the car, the second she put her foot on the roof the sunroof shattered. I figure the strain of the boat and trailer, on the ramp, was actually deforming the roof, and when she stepped on it she gave it that little bit more it needed to shatter to sunroof glass.
Lesson learned, crach the sunroof whenever towing (takes it out of any type of structural path.
in terms of hte x-terra, i've never towed my boat with my friends xterra, but he towes a trailer with three motorcyles on it regularly without a problem, although even with the supercharged one i was able to smoke him in a 1997 suburban 1500, WITH my boat attached to it |

I have a hard time seeing that unless the race were only to 15mph or your boat is about 300 lbs.... |
