ok...here's the deal... I spent forever working on a dang backroll just so i could say i did an invert. This may have been the stupidest thing i ever did because i skipped the basics. I FINALLY landed that thing last summer on my last run of the season. Now that I have that what should i do? Should i really go all the way back to learning the 180's? I mean i can do them kinda... and i landed a 3 once. But I can't even jump the wake toeside . Damn i guess i should start back huh?... how fast do you think I'll progress since i have a ton of riding under my belt just no work on toeside and no work on basically anything but a backroll? Thanks for your comments and input

zcashion, First, it's not a step back, because you aren't past it in the first place
Second you don't "have a backroll" you landed it once, on your last run last summer.
Third, don't attempt another one until you can clear the wake HS, TS, and Switch HS (Switch TS would be even better). Grabs and 180s look way better than a hacked roll. Get your fundamentals, then progress from there. It's hard to build anything without a foundation.
There are two sides to the wake, why waste one?

sorry. by "have that" i meant that i can say that i've landed it. not that i have it dialed. But you're definitely right. I need to stop getting ahead of myself because it's a waste of time. I DO however love doing ridiculous things for the wipeout competitions i have with my friends. haha. here's a picture of a raley that i ended up doing a huge frontflip and hitting my face. lol

zcashion, the funny thing is people always think they look cool when they land an invert. So they go for it first off. "Lets do the crazy flips, raleys, whatever because it'll look sweet."
The fact is even when they land one of those it generally looks like crap, is all out of balance and then they look awkward the rest of the time (crossing over the wake with their tail between their legs instead of doing a toeside trick) If you bring out someone who can land crappy looking inverts vs someone who lands stylish 180s even novices will notice the difference.
Definitely go back and learn the basics. You won't progress much farther until you've gone back and learned them. You could probably hit a trantrum and a raley but won't get any farther until you learn your 180s, switch riding, toeside jumps and just get comfortable on the board.
Toeside jumps are easy to learn because you have to cross the wake anyways. Just start off slow and try to get a little pop. Next time go a little faster and try to get more pop. In a couple of sessions you should be able to clear the wake.
At least you've come to this realization. Now you know. And knowing is half the battle. Good luck.

sounds like a kid i knows problem, he landed a backroll, thought he was the ish, he landed a raley next, now he hits the biggest hoochies, raleys, ohh's, he can hit a hs 360, sometimes slob.... cant jump the wake hs clean, his style is horrible on grabs, cant hs 180, cant jump wake ts, when he rides he does something huge then cuts back to the other side, its not really something thats too exciting to watch from the boat. me and my friend lewis have surpassed him cuz we have pretty good style and throw clean tricks, land stuff to blind, and he just claims to have the biggest raleys and stuff.... definately learn the basics or u'll become cocky

HAHA , wipeout competitions , I'll have to try that. This topic has actually helped me some too, I've been hell bent on landing tantrums and what nots for the longest time , but it does make sense that I should get the basics down before I seriously try my hand at inverts. But Im sure I'll try to throw a couple just to see what happens haha. Thanks guys.

haha you should definitely do the wipeout thing. it seems stupid i know but it's so fun and it makes you not feel bad about yourself for not being able to land cool tricks . haha...above that though it helps with getting the guts to charge the wake with all you have..especially if you get it on film and know that you'll be watching it later. Haha

| thanks guys for helping me out. I guess it's just that it's so hard because everybody always wants me to do something that will look cool. and i always have about 7 friends with me that all want to ride so i pull them around most of the day and then board for like 5 minutes. I'll try to ride early mornings and maybe my friends will be less inclined to come haha. Then i'll take them out later.

RufioSwashbuckle, the point of this isn't that you shouldn't try inverts. The point is you need to work on your basics also. There's nothing wrong with being able to do a trantrum before you can do big hs 180s with grabs. But you can't forgo the basics and just completely jump to the inverts. If I were to lay out a gameplan for a run it would include starting off small. Get your hs jumps down. On each toeside jump either work on getting more pop off the wake than the previous time or try cutting in switch (start slow) and work on your switch hs tricks. On both hs and ts work on fs 180s to start with. Then maybe once or twice in a set try a tantrum or a backroll or a 360. Maybe one day work on backrolls only or one day 360s only. But even when you're working on that stuff you're still slowly getting your basics down by mostly doing grabs, 180s, toeside jumps, switch jumps etc. I would say in any given run you should have a list of tricks you're trying to work on. The easy stuff which you're just trying to look better, get more comfortable and add style and the hard stuff that you're hoping to land for the first time. If you come up with a list of these before you start your run you'll be set for some progressive riding.

One thing for sure, your frustration level is going to get high this year. If you stay true to working on the basics you will be able to work through it but some just can't stand looking like a Wally and never try to learn switch or TS jumps...
It says it all in my signature line..................

yea you're prolly right but i think i'd get even more frustrated if i kept trying to build on nothing and end up not progressing at all
