|
|
I was just wondering how many people on here surf around Santa Cruz. I am pretty new to surfing, but I like to go out at 26th St. in Capitola. Where does everyone else go?
Also, if you have any suggestions on some easy spots for new surfers, so they (myself included) won't get in anyone else's way, that would be cool. |

I'm SC local. Steamer Lane is my spot, but I surf all over, I like 26th when it fires. Other good beginner type spots you might wanna check are Capitola Jetty, Manresa, 2nd & 3rd Peak Pleasure Point, Cowell's, etc. |

Santa Cruz here...
Normally stick to the West Side (Lane, Mitchell's, Getchell, Swift, Stockton sometimes)and anywhere north of town...
I like to hit 26th and the Hook when the swells coming in the right direction, but don't hit that side of town too often. |

SC also. I used to surf there a ton when I lived that direction. Still surf there, just not a ton anymore. Now that I'm in Sac, I don't get down there as much, especially with the new kiddo and all. But the suggestions listed above are good.
Cowells or 38th Street in Capitola or up at Lindamar in Pacifica are great spots for beginners.
I surf Pleasure or 38th typically. I surfed West side alot when I first started surfing SC, but I have taken a liking to Capitola for some reason... I have the place, more wired than anywhere else, I suppose. Plus, I longboard more than short, so the wave fits better for my style (if you can call it that). _________________ (insert funny chit here) |

Thanks everyone for replying, and for the good suggestions. Some friends of mine and I are heading out tomorrow, and will probably check out some of the locations you suggested. Thanks again. |

Jester, a friend mentioned a break called sharkies somewhere near Manresa. You have any idea what he is talking about? I don't know SC that well. Just got to play around at the state beach a few times when we took out jr. guard group down for a weekend. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

Sharkies is just a bit south of The Hook. If you walk up the beach from The Hook you'll hit Private's & then Sharkies. |

Jester and Nor*Cal,
It's the other way around. You hit sharkies then privates when walking south from the hook.
See for yourself.

Are you kidding? You gotta be one of the heavies to surf Weasel! You must be core if you know the locals well enuff to surf that spot.
Beyond that, my surfing's gone down the toilet since grad school started. I think I'll be able to start gettin' back in shape very shortly (just in time for small wave season, hooray!). Still, my barrel riding needs a lotta work before I try to get shacked at Stockton, that reform on the inside throws SQUARE.
Maybe next time I'm feelin' brave I'll hit you up to get me into the circle. |

Jester,
sht, I can only paddle out there when invited, myself. I lived over on the Westside for almost 4 years before I surfed it for my first time. Luckily my roomie at the time grew up with all of those cats, so I had an in...but only when invited as I stated. I've only been out there 1/2 dozen times or so, and really want to go back. That inside bowl is INSANE!! You can literally stay shacked from take off to beach if you get the place dialed....very very fast take off. The first few waves I took there I got worked...real bad. |

K-dub,
Has Cortes been going off?
I know it's south, but don't a bunch of the Maverick guys go there? _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

K-dub,
New "Surfer: mag has a huge article on Mavericks. You might want to check it out if you don't get it already. _________________ www.integrity-wake.com |

didnt realize manresa was that far around the shore from everything else. Some of my not so ocean-smart friends got themselves caught in a riptide there and almost (in their version of the story) didnt make it. |

I buy that story, the rips at Manresa can get gnarly sometimes. If you're not experienced & don't know to swim parallel to the shore 'til you get out of it you might paddle yourself dead. It's happened there before, they have a sign up in the parking lot now instructing you how to get out of one. |
