Wax. Or a new coat of varnish or something.

I have an older flat cassette that was the same way. I took a heat gun (much easier than sanding) and got all of the grip tape and paint/decals off of it. I then sanded it down, and repainted it, added some stickers and then put about 10 layers of polyurethane over it. I then re-gripped it with some industrial grip tape, and it is actually better than new !!!
