Well letting go of your lead hand will work but if you want to do it with the proper technique you should approach just like you would a normal backroll w2w, put your chin on your rear shoulder and with both hands stick the handle on your rear hip while doing a backroll and it will automatically go to revert land on your toes and ride away.
peace

I started landing them consistently once i kept the handle to my hip on the landing. If you arm is out too far, then it will make you slip out on your heels. Also, keeping your knees bent will help you to not slip out. Once you get that, throw a melan grab in there. Peace out.

If you find that you are slipping out on the landing, try to focus on keeping your weight on your toes landing, and edging away from the wake on your toe side edge. Like the others have said, the 180 is all about handle position.

Progressive cut like a normal backroll, trying to get more height than distance when learning them.
When you hit the wake push the board out the back, so you get a bit laid out like an S-Bend.
When you get upside down and feel the pull on the handle release your front hand (left for regular riders).
Coming down stick the handle to your (right hip for regular rider) as hard as you can and push it downwards along your body - so you dont get pulled over.
SPOT THE SHORE - or you will go A-over ever time... if you have popped enough off the wake the landing should be like a normal HS 180, just land on your toes looking at the shore leaning against the rope.

Good luck dude,

Cameron

Cameron nailed it.

The only other thing is that it is more stalled out than a regular backroll because it is less of a rotation. It's hard to get used to, but once you do it, you'll know what I am talking about. Take it slow.

And when you land, put the handle in your back pocket of your lead hip and push it back toward the wake. This will help you from sliding out.

later...
