What is the difference other in price. I know that the powerbook can hold more ram then the ibook, and that it cost more. Other then it being a faster, is there any more difference. Also what would you recomend for someone who needs the computer for internet use, and school work.
Also i will be switching over from a pc and i need to know one thing; will it have solitaire?

The aluminum/titanium powerbook line has generally faster processors and more video RAM (more screen resolution except for the 12"). The chassis/enclosure is more robust and has a PCMCIA card reader (ibook does not). Faster bus/architecture, bigger harddrives, DVI external monitor support also. That new 14" ibook is nice however and is probably better overall then a 12" powerbook for what you're doing. It comes bundled with a builtin wireless card which is nice. No bundled solitaire but there are a couple of freeware versions that you can easily download.

Ryan-
I've had both an ibook and a powerbook (current machine) and for what you want to do - surf the web, listen to iTunes, write papers, watch DVDs, I'd go with the ibook. You'll save some $$, an get an awesome machine. If I wasn't doing a lot of video editing, I'd still have my ibook.
RD makes a good point - if you want to push your machine to the limits everyday, you'll appreciate the powerbook's fast architecture.
Something to note about the 14" ibook - it is very close in price to a 12" powerbook. Some people don't like the 12" screen, but I loved it as it made my ibook very portable and light.
Feel free to PM me with any more ?s you have...good choice on getting a mac.

the powerbook as the new ams tracking or whatever. that senses shifts in gravity. and will shut down your hard drive if it senses your computer falling. so you wont mess up your harddrive

i just got a 12inch yesterday. I just like the feal of the powerbooks over the ibooks.

That is a nice feature! It's too bad the ibook doesn't have that feature for it's LCD! check out what happened when one of our employees dropped a brand new ibook. Luckily we bought it on Amex and they have purchase protection so they're replacing it. You can use one of these with an external monitor just like a regular computer if you add a keyboard/mouse, it will boot up even with a dead screen (or mangled like this one here) Anyone know of a cheap place that replaces LCD's?

the cheapest way would be if you know someone who can do it. buy a screen of ebay. and have a buddy install it. i think apple charges $500 for LCD screen replacement on Ibooks. HOW did he drop that thing?...i mean. ive had mine literaly fly out of my backpack and roll down the sidewalk. with me running after it. my buddy has one that he let some girl borrow...and some how a TV fell on it?...cause those are just falling all the time. but anyway your employee must have thrown that out on the freeway.

yeah..how did that happen? My Ibook was rock solid except when I spilled Orange Juice on the screen...free replacement with AppleCare!

I dropped my powerbook out of my truck and onto concrete and it lived to tell about it...

Slid out of a gal's hands and hit the carpet! I haven't seen any 14" LCD's on ebay yet but I'll keep looking.

Rich,

No worries... honestly, I have no idea... I just did a quick Google, and that's what I found.

Neither of the two will come with solitaire, but you can download many free versions from www.macupdate.com .

If you only use it for internet/wordprocessing/music/light gaming then go with the iBook. If you plan on doing a lot of video editing/3D gaming/anything that would really take a lot of processor power, go with the PowerBook. From what you've said, I'd say go with the iBook.

For anyone who needs an LCD replacement. Visit www.screentekinc.com they have LCD's at wholesale prices (just the screens). I'm getting one for my Powerbook that I F*ed the screen on. Apple wanted $1200, I'm doing it myself through them for a little under $300.

*NOTE* This is Bowen I'm just on Joe's comp...

Thanks Joe, that's exactly what I was looking for. It seemed amazing that these shops would ask for as much as the unit costs new to replace these things but that's what I was finding!

No prob... good luck. I won't be able to order mine until after exams are over, 'cause I can't afford to loose my comp if I mess something up.
