IP problems

i have 2 computers hooked up to a Linksys router and on one i had to reset the web settings to download a program this reset the IP address and the computer wont renew it i tryed the start, run, cmd, ipconfig /renew solution but it wouldnt work so can somebody please help me.

Have you tried to restart the modem and router?

What msg do you get after the IP Renew fails?

Yes i tryed restarting them. The message i get says the operation has failed as no adapter is in the sate permissable for this operation. But i have it hooked up by wire and the light on the linksys is light up and on the computer so it seems to be working.

My honest guess is that you corrupted your IP stack. You need to reinstall TCP/IP. If it is XP, it will take a little work. But its worth it. Do this...

You need to edit your registry.
Start>run> 'regedit'
Go to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE > System > Current Control Set > Services
You want to right-click and delete Winsock and Winsock2. It is ok to do this. Reboot after they are deleted.

Log back in and search your HD for this file.. 'nettcpip.inf'

Once you know where the file is located, go to your network properties (where you can view TCP/IP properties). Hit "Install" then "Protocol". Select 'Have Disk', then browse to the folder where your nettcpip.inf file is located. Select it, then select TCP/IP for install. Hit ok. Reboot after it finishes. Log back in and see if you have an IP.

Reinstalling TCP/IP in XP is ridiculous- they lock it in the registry so you cant remove it on accident. So it takes all that!

Thanks for your help i will try this and if it doesnt work ill just end up calling some it guy to come out and fix it.

you need to release the IP before you can renew it -

try this at a command prompt: ipconfig /release

Once that is successful then run: ipconfig /renew

I agree with garveyj, First release your IP on your PC's then shut down. Then turn off modem, turn off router,... wait... now turn back on Modem wait till you get a link light, then turn on router, wait till you have connectivity then turn on 1 PC at a time. I am running 4 PC's and an xbox off of my router and sometimes I run into this issue.
