|

I have just had an interesting conversation with Jim from ACME. He tells me that the 14x20 OJ that comes stock with certain Mastercraft Xstars is hand made and is not as good as the equivelent 14x20 ACME. ACME props are CNC milled and so should theoretically be identical, whereas standard OJ props are hand made and have minor variations which effect performance.
I need a better hole shot and he recommends ACME model 381 (13.5x17.5) or the new 817 (also 13.5x17.5). I asked what the difference was and the 817 has 0.045 thicker cup which should give better high end speed and better fuel economy as compaired to the 381. I have done many searches on this board and the 381 is mentioned a lot - there is nothing however for the new 817
Any experience on this issue?
The dealer here in Northern Ireland wants £450 for the equivelent OJ. That is almost $900. I can buy the ACME for $410 and get my cousin who lives in SC to bring it home next time she's coming. _________________ Wakeboarding is so Kool in Ireland! |

Brother....for $900 I hope that they fly over and hand tune that thing. It sure is odd that it costs that much.....but,
I have asked a lot of prop questions on here and elsewhere and everyone has said to call ACME and they will shoot straight with you. I would shop around...
With distinct differences on the props. I used to run a 14-18 3 blade on my MC and now run a 14-18 4 blade.....lost of difference. I am thinking about going with ACME on my next prop.....probably run a stainless next time.

This is kind of a worthless response as it doesn't address your questions, but....
I called Jim, got the ACME prop he told me I needed for my 1991 Malibu, and I can tell you that it has been the single best thing I have done to my boat. I have complete faith in those guys. |

I had a 2002 XStar that came with the OJ 14x20 stock prop. I went to the Acme 381 and it was awesome. I didn't know at the time if it was because the Acme or just propping down. I had much better fuel economy and hole shot. I lost a couple mph on the topend but who cares. In July last year I got my 2005 X2. They come stock with the OJ 13.7x17.5 prop. I ordered the equivelant 381 in the spline shaft for the new boat but the dealer messed up and got the 13.5x16.5. I told him I'd try it before sending it back. I did not loose any topend on the boat and it gets better fuel economy. I was more impressed compairing the new boat and it's performance and will be a lifetime acme customer. _________________ I broke a mirror.

Acme is the real deal. I have replaced quite a few Master Craft OJ props with Acmes and have never had one returned. Acme not only has the best milling procedures, they operate their own foundry and use all mil-spec NiBrAl. Finally, they have their own propriatry shapes that are simply more efficient than the other designs. You won't find as much difference as a re-power job, but it will be the best performance enhancer under $400 that you will ever have for your boat.
Let me know if you need a discounted Acme. _________________ Original Boarder from 1983
