i am trying to land my first back roll. i do not have a tramp to practice on so it makes it pretty hard. i can do flips with out the board on pretty much any surface but when i have a board on my feet it is very hard. i get really lost in the air and lose where i am at and lose the handle. how do i get better?

the key to the backroll is not throwing a flip. It's all about rope tension and letting the wake throw you into the trick. read the trick tips, it's pretty straight forward.

I find it easiest to think of it this way: Hold your edge the whole way into the wake, after the pop, turn your head to the left over your shoulder and send your right shoulder towards your left knee. Of course this is heelside, riding regular. Just switch the directions if you're goofy. By twisting your upper body you will initiate the rotation. Hopefully this helps.

When I was first learning backrolls, I had a buddy of mine (who happens to be an awesome rider) video tape me and he was able to point out my problem. As I was going up the wake, I had too much weight on my back leg. This robbed me of the "pop" so while my rotation was good, I just didn't get the needed air to complete the trick. Now a lot of times I don't think about it when I'm throwing it, but every now and then I'll have a 'brain fart' where I crash on a couple of attempts in a row. When that happens I go back to the basics on how I learned this trick:

1) Coming into the wake, I concentrate on keeping about 60% of my weight on my front foot. That way I'm assured to get good pop.

2) As I'm riding up the wake, I drive the nose of the board as far away from the boat as possible.

I find if I concentrate on those two things, I usually throw a nice, big, lofty backroll.

L8,

wakepimp-Is that a backside backroll you are doing? LOL...don't worry I'll let it go some day...If you haven't figured it out by now, I'm just bustn' ya, bro...

I do what PJ tells you to do in Higher education. I rock back in my stance slightly so more weight is on the BACK foot. I LOAD the LINE harder and harder as I approach the wake, ride all the way up the wake and look over my left shoulder.

dats how I have been doin' em....

J Dogg - yeah, as I'm riding up the wake, I shift from my backside to my frontside...lol

Seriously though, this summer I wanna get a nosegrab roll. That one Shaun throws at the very beginning of Detention looks so sweet!!!
