Your building a tesla coil for a math final?
i belive the simple way to do it is have a coli inulated on a rubber stand then have a rubber conveir belt with melt paritions in it, and a - hot power source at the bottom, the conveyer turnrs constantly and rubs the metal poitns agains the coil and then they go down to the bottom and rub the - source and collect electrons after awhile this builds a massive negative charge ont he coil and it will discharge to the nearest source or ground.

Wait, am I really the only one who read into that? Come on, "hot power source", "rubs the source", "discharge to the ground"? Wow, I must really be deprived or something. I don't usually think like that.
Okay, I'm crazy.

No, you're fine. it's just that us guys don't like to think that hard. It's alot easier for us to type "boobies" into yahoo's search bar and go to town.

if you're not bright enough to do any of the following:
A) Study and Go to class, where they probably told you how to do this
B) Do a search on yahoo for 'Tesla Coil' and look at any of the first 10 posts
C) Look at any of the links posted in this thread
D) Be able to figure out where that picture is linked to
then you deserve to fail your final.

Bigred and Hyperash
I have to agree with BR. There are multitudes of plans for a tesla coil on the net.
If you haven't found any, perhaps it's God's way of saying you shouldn't mess around with electricity. An arc of electricity flying between two electrodes is not really something for you to play with.
You are sixteen according to your profile. Do you really think building a Tesla coil is appropriate? They rarely work the first time out and you have to tweak and tune them - actually play and work with electricity.
Perhaps a less ambitious project? 25thousand volts is nothing to mess around with. ( very cheap method using a car's ignition coil )
Much like holding on to the ignition wire of a car.

Leggester -
I would hope that the teacher is just looking for plans and a basic understanding of them for our hero to pull off a passing grade.
If they are actually planning on BUILDING a Tesla Coil, then the Internet is a dangerous place!

Well, he says "build one for my math final". That's pretty precise. And a bit dangerous.

Something is fishy here from the start. A sophomore/junior MATH class building a Tesla coil? I have a hard time believing this.
Here's some more concerns:
1.0) Electrical Hazards, Fuses and Safety Switches
Tesla coils use high voltages, and the risk of death or injury is significant. The following general guidelines are suggested:
Never adjust tesla coils when the power is turned on.
High voltage capacitors may hold a charge long after power is turned off. Always discharge capacitors before adjusting a primary circuit.
Make sure the metal cases of transformers, motors, control panels and other items associated with tesla coils are properly grounded.
Make sure that you are far enough away from the corona discharge so that it cannot strike you. Do not come in contact with metal objects which might be subject to a strike from the secondary.
The low voltage primary circuit is extremely dangerous! These voltages are especially lethal to humans. Make sure these circuits are well insulated so users cannot come in contact with the A.C. line voltage.
A safety key should be used in the low voltage circuit to prevent unauthorized use.
Use adequate fusing of the primary power and/or circuit breakers to limit the maximum current to your control panel. Do NOT count on your home circuit panel to provide adequate protection!
Never operate a tesla coil in an area where there is standing water, or where a significant shock hazard exists.
Do not operate a tesla coil when pets or small children are present.
Spend some time laying out your circuits. Hot glue, electrical tape and exposed wiring are quick and easy, but could be lethal.

I believe you're describing a Van DeGraff Generator. A Tesla coil is merely a transformer that jumps the voltage way up and the amperage way way down. (If I remember my physics correctly.)

I beg to differ. Playing with arcing electricity is the entire point of a Tesla coil. You just have to be sure that you have the voltage/amperage converted correctly.
In college physics, each semester we had a "design your own" lab project. In physics 102 (electricity and magnetism) I had a couple demented lab partners, so we decided to do a test to determine how much potential difference (voltage) a van degraff generator produces. Using the dielectric constant for air, we decided to determine the voltage by seeing how far a spark would jump from the generator. Rather than place an inanimate ground near the generator for the spark to jump to, we decided to use a person for the test. The one lucky lab partner (Steve) held a meter stick with one end touching the generator. He held it at arms length and kept a finger outstretched on it so we could record the measurements. He kept moving the hand further down the meter stick to see the maximum distance, hence maximum voltage, that the spark would jump. At first it wasn't that big a deal. But, as he moved further down the stick, there would be more and more time between sparks as the generator built up the necessary charge.
Things started to get really funny towards the end. I think the professor gave us extra points just for the entertainment factor. When we started hitting the maximum distance, the jolts would actually make Steve's toes twitch. I'd have to dig up the lab papers to say for sure, but I believe the maximum distance the spark covered worked out to be upwards of 6 million volts.

Buy one. Take it apart and reassemble it in a way that makes it look like you built it. Hand it in for the extra credit.
