So we're thinking we want to get a police scanner to help us on those days we don't have a third. Usually just early and late in the season, they don't patrol the lakes we're on and recently some @#$#@$ called the cops on us. We figure if we have a police scanner we can hear the dispatch and get out of there before we get a ticket.
Anyone have any experiance with police scanners? Do you think they would help in this case? I think our lake is about 3 miles from the police headquarters.

uh... if they're chasing you isn't that evading the police? and probably carries a higher fine than just paying the no-third ticket?

seems to me like he's talking about getting out of the lake before they even show up, not running from them once they're busted.
sounds like a good idea to me.... _________________ "Half of what I say is meaningless, but I say it just to reach you" |

Exactly franknbeans, though it is still probably illegal to use a scanner like that. I just want to know the range, if the dispatcher's signal is stonger than that of the patrol cars, etc...

We do that in the winter quite a bit...they're also fun to listen to when you're bored at home. Some of the stuff you hear on those things is crazy! |

I'm not sure of the legality issues but it sounds cool. I think I have been on a boat with one. We were picking up Fire and Police and even heard the coast guard a few times. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

a friend of mine's dad owns a towtruck company in norcal and he has police scanners in all of the trucks. he told me that they are legal to have you just get in trouble if you start talking on them. i dont know if the laws are different in towtrucks but i just thought i'd mention it.
if you are seriously thinking about using one i'd check the state's laws. sounds like a good idea. _________________ www.TheLiquidPlayground.com

| if it is illegal, you can build one to work with your normal AM/FM radio... and just hide it below... they would never know. However you will also have to be pretty handy at knowing how to build/use ossicilators. If you would like i can get schamatics i suppose. |

Scanners are one way they only receive a signal... you would need a full blown police radio in order to talk on it....
I don't even think the lake fuzz even use them around us...

The rangers and sherrif on my lake use the scanners to talk between organizations. This way they can stay on their own frequency and still communicate between the county sheriff and the state rangers. _________________ If I agreed with you we would both be wrong. |

It is not that hard to find a third. Just grab a gur from another boat and offer him some beer for his services. _________________ Founding Member of the Forearm Club of America!

yeah, it is easy when it is warm, I'm talking about november when the air is 38 and the water is 41. When it's warm we can't take everyone that wants to go...

Another way to go is to get a hold of a HAM Radio, just lose the Mic. you can listen to everything the Police have to say on any frequency. I used to do rescue work on the coast we could listen and talk with Coast Gaurd, Police, Fire, and Medical with those radios. If you lose the mice you don't have to worry about someone picking it up and talking. That is illegal, but you can listen thats fair game. |
