While searching for a head cleaning tape, I was told my a salesman, that cleaning tapes are hard on the heads and shouldn't be used unless you absolutely need them. He recommended a professional head cleaning.

Has anyone else heard this? I've never been told that before... Question

yup. i wouldnt use a head cleaning tape unless you really need to. ive had the heads cleaned on my XL-1 twice now. it isnt exactly cheap but you shouldnt need to do it too often. also try to use the same brand of tape as often as possible.

Yep, they can put a lot of wear on the heads.

Scott, how much did it set you back to get your XL-1 cleaned? My GL1 is beginning to have some issues.

Pic not related...

If abused by your typical consumer (more is better type) then they can cause harm.

If you have a dirty head, a few seconds of a head cleaning tape is fine and usually solves the problem (assuming you don't have 10-30 on the head).

the shop here quoted me $60 for a cleaning. They said they tear the whole mechanism down, clean it, then put it back together. Since the guy answering the phone sounded older than dirt, i'm not sure I trust him to put together fine moving parts. Someone must trust him though b/c he said he had a 3 week backlog! Shocked

I really WANT to get a new camera. I'm still REALLY torn up between the DVX and the Sony. The only issues I have are that I'll be needing new waterproof housings and wide angle lenses no matter which one I get.

I'll need to flow the GL1 on to afford a new camera. Also, if I'm selling my GL1 to someone I know (which I could very well be doing), I dunno how I'd feel about having them have to deal with dodgy heads and I'd at least want an idea of what it may cost.

I'm on a tight budget, although I just got a video gig thats giving me a few extra grand to play with, which is nice.

Blabbing on now...
