Your amp should have an indicator light that turns on when the amp is switched on.

there is probably loose connections somewhere between the stereo and the speakers. First check the wiring behind the stereo and make sure all the wires are tight and not corroded. than check each speaker. If that isn't the problem than your probably looking at a new stereo. _________________ Does this rag smell like chloroform?

"sometimes" like randomly, or is there any sort of a pattern... basically there's no way to tell what it is without more details...
so... help us out with more details, then maybe we can help you out with more advice and suggestions... (just a thought) |

Chaz has a good point. If they are cdrw's you burned then they will not work in every cd player. I had the same problem.

no it doesnt work with the radio either so it is not just burnt cds. dschock, it is just random there is no pattern. when we take our boat in we are going to ask the mechanics to check out the problem but i just thought that maybe i could fix it before then if it is something simple

Sounds like primary circuit to the audio board. My guess, either crossed polarity (not only power wires, but speaker wires as well) at some time in the past or took a voltage spike.
This assumes that there is at least one set of speakers running off the head unit itself, not all of them going thru amps.

Maby a bad connection on the "remote-wire" (the thin wire between your headunit and your amp, that tells your amp when to power up).
