Posted: May 01, 2006 4:09 am Post subject: 06 LF Shane Bindings personal Review(long winded version) |
|
|
like been said here over and over again ,bindings are definitly personal and while one pair may not be so great for one they may be the best thing since slice bread for another...
i had my doubts about the shanes and was trying to decide between the new 06 zeus which i demoed, then i tried on a pair of murrays and 3ds ,and waited too make my purchase until the shanes came in..
well they finally came in and i tried all the later three on again in the shop which included the Shanes..
I struggeld to get on the murrays and 3ds with loob and the murrays pinched my toes a lot and the 3ds felt decent but a bit heavy and stiff..
i was looking for something that would be easier to get in and out(including cold weather/water riding which i ride just as much as summer here in Texas) of and have a limited break in period.. theres no way i would be able to get in the Hypes in cold water with the heel being so hard to push past and the 3ds were so stiff i dont think i would ever break them in and be able to put them on in the water if i crashed out of them..I woiuld need lube for sure..
so it was down to zeus and Shanes..They were having a huge sale at my local shop and i save nearly 130 bucks on the Shanes and couple that with being able to shove my foot in them hands and lube free ,then walk around the shop for ten minutes with no foot fatigue ,i went for it,boughth the Shanes..
I wasnt thrilled with the look of them( big bulky, and awkard looking ,plus dont like white bindings) and being closed toe with a newly introduced product made me think a lot, maybe buyers remorse...
until i rode them today ,three hard sets ..they are just as comfortable to wear while riding as in the shop they land super soft ,dont feel bulky and not too much to really break in on them.I was locked in and my feet never slipped forward and the only pressure i felt was the back of my ankle by my achilles and they are a bit tall and rubbed my calf a bit but by the third set that all but dissapeard..the lace magnets are super cool and the laces didnt slip.
i am completey confident i will keep these as my long term binding if they hold up and stay functioning like this..
they feel like a pair of basketball shoes while riding. The look will grow on me .
only the future will tell if they start smellign from drying off to slow and whether they will hold up to abuse but for now im happy with the Shanes..
BTW the 9/10s fit me great as i am a 9.5/10 in regular shoes
damn this was along reply, oh well hope it helps others ..

Bill - I've been thinking about getting some shanes and I just wanted to ask you how the heel hold down was. I tried a pair on in my shop and it felt like my heel would lift. Any heel lift for you?

billm, was that board screaming NOOOO NNOOOOOOOOO NOOOOOOOOOOO PLEASE NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO when you were screwing those down?
Anyhow, good review.
As for the stank, umm, my cousin rigged up some computer fans and an old transformer from an answering machine or some stuff... basically matched voltage, polarity, and amperage to the fans. Well, he takes the fans and sets them on top of his snowboard boots after a ride - it really speeds up the drying process and keeps the air moving enough to stop the stank. He even rigged it up so there were 4 fans - 2 for the boots, and 2 for his gloves. Pretty ingenious if you ask me.

I think they look sexy as hell on your AbsPlat. Glad you like your bindings, I tried those on in the shop and fell in love immediately, I had already bought the limited transits though. They're a great binding, hope they last you.

thane i didnt have any heel lift at all when they are laced down etc..
actually the only real pressure point i had was behind my heal at my achilles because they wer pushing there a bit at first ..felt good by the third ride..
trust me too im very picky about heel lift ,my zeus had none and so far these do not ..
however like i said in the first line try them out before you decide on them..lucky for me i can bring anything back to my local shop within thirty days of purchase and trade them on something else as long as i dont tear them up...so there was no real need to demo..
Brad for sure these are the first LF bindings ive tried since i left my dead 99 LF Prosucks for HL then went to cwb..im still diging the zeus but these are different

Ya i tried on some watsons this weekend and wasnt happy with the heel hold either, the lacing configuration dosnt really do much for heel hold on LF boots. Or maybe its just because they were new and not broken in.
So I just got 3DS's instead, and i've never been happier with a purchase they were 75$ less than the Shanes too.
In my opinion the same or more amount of bang for way less buck.

Wake On My Mind, I don't know about that. I tried to put on the 3ds' and it was taking waaay too much effort to even get my foot in so I was like "F THIS!" And I used to ride Ultras.

Thanks for the detailed thoughts bill. I'm looking into picking up some shane's this summer, and have yet to try some on. I sure hope that I can get a deal like the one your shop was running! What is the deal with the 'heat moldable' aspect? Did you do this? My new snowboard bindings are moldable and I love them, but I wasn't sure how that would translate to the water.

i think ill just let them mold to my feet slowly ,dont think you have to actually put them in hot water while on your feet to get them to do the same thing .
im sure in the hot sun and while using them they will mold to your feet..
not sure though maybe i will try the hot water thing to help them along
BTW Nobody will be wearing these but me so the mold will be my foot only..

I thought that you meant when they start to grow mold, it will be yours. lol but i get it now.
Yea, with these new moldable boots they should really only be worn by one person because i would hate it if somone with a bigger foot screwed everything up for me.

| If you have access to a hottub, that is a great way to mold em. Just slap on those bindings, lace them down super duper tight, and chill for 10 minutes. Then run them under cold water for a minute and they will have some extra comfort!

I wouldn't recommend putting any binding in chlorinated water....
A hot bathtub, ok, but no chlorine please.

thanks for the review.
I'm looking into these bindings too, look a little different but, confort is mainly all that matters to me.
