Awesome camera but with only 4fps its not really for sports photography. I gotta try out the new 20d, how do you like yours oldschoolripper? _________________ Trying to get into some wakeboarding photography, anyone out there in the Orlando area with some skills wanna hook up for a shoot? So far REAL NICE! Autofocus is worlds better than Digital Rebel, so is speed, and lots of other things. A much much nicer camera than the digital rebel. There seems to be a lockup issue with 20D's though according to lots of folks on DPreview.com
Mine has locked twice but i popped out the battery and popped it back in and it fires right up.
Heres a link to some pics taken with the 20D

And it's so much lighter than the 1D. I figured I saved about 4 lbs going to 20D's from 1 series bodies! Mine locked up twice too, it's hard to change that battery!

I love the Nikon straps and the hoods all ductaped onto the 300 and 600's.
Shelby: That's a nice pic, how did you meter that shot? The reason I ask is you've got blown out whites on a lot of the rider. I played around with it with the highlite tool in PS CS but the detail is gone. That's a tough shot to meter with the sidelighting on the rider and the darker background. (it's hard to get the guy to stop while you spot meter him!) It looks like you could have used at least a negative stop of EC and then adjusted the brightness. I recently shot a bunch of boats with shiny reflective surfaces and really had to watch the histogram as the same thing happend to me. Here is a pic from that shoot in which I had to apply a lot of negative EC with the RAW shot and then bring the brightness/contrast back up to keep the detail in the windshield and horn. _________________ Rich Dykmans |

Want 2 Ride: Shot in Jpeg then converted to B&W with the FREE virtual photographer plugin for PS. I can get you a link if you'd like.
RD: The more I looked @ that pic last night the more i began to hate the blown out highlights. For that shot my friend said man check out 99 he's railing berms like Ricky Carmichael! I turned and shot a burst on him in about 2 sec., that was the last berm on the track on his last lap of his last moto (crap). SO, I have gone back and checked the EXIF on that shot it is:

So what rings out a big RED flag? the EC is +2/3? Is this something I have mistakingly set this way or did the camera +2/3 because of the strong back lighting and center weighted averaging? Would Raw have helped me? Help me out here RD.
Man, I have got to get a copy of PS CS, PS 6 is getting old, plus Adobe released the new Raw plugin today for CS and it supports the 20D raw files.

After going back and checking, I think I must have had the EV set for +2/3 on every shot I took in AV mode! A lesson well learned, I'm glad this was a shoot for fun! This is my second lesson well learned I now know to make sure what ISO I am shooting as well.
I do think most non-photographers don't even notice BLOW-OUTS, however, unless it's a tire or in their Drawers! LOL
Another pic just for fun, I like the sharpness and the eyes the L glass and 20 nailed it here on the focus I think (even though the helmet has a blowout thanks to my DumbA$$) |

In aperture priority (AV) mode the top dial controls the aperture and the main dial on the back dials +/- EC. You probably hit that by mistake. I haven't found the 20D's metering to be hot (like the 10D) so I wasn't suprised to see the +2/3rds for that shot. You can't fix all blown highlites in RAW, they'll still be pure white but you could have pulled a bit more detail off the bike/rider. That's a hard shot to meter because your subject isn't standing there for you to get a reading from. I think the best way to deal with shots like that is to start with 0 EC, (you can see your EC level in the VF) shoot and check the histogram. Shiny bright reflections if over exposed will show up as a spike on the rightside. If you see a spike, start dialing negative EC until it's gone. Here is the histogram for that first shot you posted, you can see the spike on the right - those are blown whites. _________________ Rich Dykmans |

Shelby:
Suggestion: Set custom function 8 to setting 1, that enables ISO 3200.
