Rome - His Holiness Pope John Paul II denounced Oscar-nominated film director Roman Polanski for having had sex with minors without ever having taken up a religious vocation.

"Look, I'm not saying Mr. Polanski needs to become a bishop or anything," said the clearly tired Pope who had just returned from testifying in the criminal trial of the 2,573rd priest this month indicted on statutory rape and sodomy charges. "But Mr. Polanski needs to get religious instruction if he wants to play in the big leagues. You know, we don't call them 'lay brothers' for nothing."

In related news, the Pope also denounced the "human cost" of the imminent war against Iraq, saying that the estimated $25 billion price tag of removing Saddam Hussein would almost cover the priest sex-abuse lawsuit settlements in the Boston Diocese.
