I need help deciding what size rope I need....Right now I am using a 70'er and I use that behind both a waverunner and a 270 sea ray. I am progressing and am at the point where I yearn for more speed and air. Would a longer rope be better for one of the two or possibly even a shorter one?

just about any new rope comes with 5 foot section most of them can be adjusted from about 55-75 feet. go to your local shop and get one with sections, whateveryou do make sure its spectra. Oh and I would recommend a 60-65 for you (handle excluded)

Agreed. Bigger Wake not longer rope. Not too many people ride beyond 70'. Put some ballast in your boat to get a bigger wake. And if you're needing more air....make sure you are edging all the way thru the wake. If you're not then you're losing a ton of potential air.

I have learned for me that rope length varies depending on the boat and the wake it puts out. For example, my boat (a 2003 Moomba Outback with no ballast) requires a short length rope to optimize the wake. Yet my friends MC requires a full length rope sans ballast because if I use the same line length I use behind my boat, the wake is too close together. I prefer a longer line and may have to get some ballast tanks for my boat to lengthen the line. When I ski behind a new boat, I usually feel out the wake to determine line length. A few cutbacks and wake jumps usually give me a quick idea of how long or short I need the line for that boat. This is especially important for me since I am a skier as well and much of the time I am behind a ski boat, not a wakeboard boat.

Is there any way to tell if the rope you currently have is a spectra or not?

Normally Spectra lines are very thin and tight and when you pull 2 different ways, the rope does not or barely stretches. A normal stretch rope (used for skiing) is thicker, normally you can easily see the patterns woven in and when you pull it stretches apart.

I have a question - I just bought a non stretch line and handle which i'll be using for the first time this weekend. It's a non stretch so it does not have sections. How do i shorten the line without tying a knot in it? Is there a way to tie it to the ski eye with 10 feet off? _________________ "Do not be alarmed, Continue swimming Naked!" - Chief Wiggum |
