Hi All,
I am a beginner and I need a little help. I would like to get a lot more air in my jumps. I'm fairly certain I'm not edging hard enough (or properly). I just started doing wake to wake grabs this morning. I am happy with my progress but I want to get a lot higher so I can do more tricks/different grabs. Can anyone who's good please take a look at this video (link below) and give some advice? Any advice is welcome.
Here is some info that may help:
- I'm 6'5" , 205lbs
- Boat: '04 Centurion Sport Bowrider
- Weight: 2 Fat Sac Side Seats weighing 600 lbs each(we have tried a few different spots....any advice on placing these would be great, too) + a few people
- Board '04 Hyperlite 141 Premier

Thanks in advance for your advice. |

Alright, first of all - that was not a grab, that was a slap. You need to actually wrap your fingers around the board and hold it for a split second for it to be a grab. -just being honest... beginners need to usually to start working on their edge to in order to get more air. i bet you can go at least twice as hard at the wake. This is what i did to get a really good edge - cut as far out as possible, stand straight up, then progressively cut harder toward the wake. If you are not comfortable with this speed, i would recommend doing what i did my first real hard cut, which was cut as hard as possible, then i let go of the rope in the air, to get a feel for it. When you are really good at cutting, your butt should almost hit the water when cutting - you should jump about twice the width of your wake, and get at least 6' of air. Second, can you ollie well? ollieing is good to learn cause it helps with your timing. when you approach the wake (cutting hard of course), your knees should be slightly bent. you should extend your legs and 'push off' from the wake for maximum pop. if done wrong, you will lose most of your pop - if done correctly, you can get at least 5' of air with how hard you were cutting in that video. Sometimes crouching low to the water helps me gain speed. after this, and only this, you should work on your equipment. your board has good pop - so that doesnt need to go. your boat, from what i have seen, is challenging to make it into a wakeboat. i am not sure if your model has the wakeplate on it - but that should be in its proper position or bought if you have the resources. then the boat's weight, my neighbors have a boat similiar to yours (i think an 01 centurion bow rider), they have to put between 2000 and 2500 pounds in it - then the wake is pretty good. also, a spectra tow rope is needed for maximum height.
conclusion:
more weight
better line
much harder edge (70%) of your problem
push off from wake
-i am 6'3" and 190. a lot of people said i wouldnt be able to jump as high as shorter and lighter guys, i am not winning contests, but i dont know anyone that can jump as high as me. my only problem is landing, my knees are starting to hurt.
-one other thing - to help with your grabs, as your edging toward the wake, put the rope onto your hip - this will increase your speed = more pop - and it will make it a lot easier to grab.
good luck - wow - my longest yet _________________ Worrying is a lot like a rocking chair, its something to do...but it won't get you anywhere. |
