Just rode in my very first competition and a had a lot of fun. I'm in the ever so intense masters class so by no means do I really care that much.
The competition was the Hyperlite stop here in Calgary. I came in third, but really thought I should have come in second. Just wondering how the judges view these things. The guy that won first had a solid run and should have been in first however, the one that came in second could only go wake to wake on his heelside. Toeside he only did one wake, however he did a toeside 180 one wake, a switch 180 one wake and a couple of heelside wake to wakes and a heelside 180 one wake. He did a couple of other surface tricks as well.
I jumped the wake heelside and landed out in the flats a couple of times. Went wake to wake toe side, also did a couple of toeside wtw 180's. I could have done a heelside 180 one wake in my sleep. I suck at landing the WTW healside 180 though. So I didn't do the one wake just because it's kind of chimpy going one wake, and thought a big healside in the flat with a grab would be better?
Anyways everyone that talked to me afterwords said I should have been in second, and I went bigger than everyone else in the class.
If I enter another one of these in the future, what's better? Doing more smaller easier tricks or trying to go bigger and throw some style in? Like I said before, not a big deal just wondering what the judges look for? Just didn't think the better rider took second. |

| maybe you repeated a few tricks, if he did a differnt trick everytime then that's what it might have been |

Hey,
Bambamski, i was going to go to that comp ||||||| the way it sounds like they screwed up??
TIPS:
1. never do the same thing twice
2. go big the judges will knowdus that
the Judging in Canada is run by: Height and Intensity, Comazition and Execution they are each out of ten
if you where at the Hyperlite comp in Kelowna i would of been judging you
Bambamski r u going to natianals? _________________ www.Crawlinbc.com |

I've been judging for the last 5 years at the Candaian wake comps and this is how it goes:
Intensity- how big yyour tricks are
Composition- different types of tricks, does your run flow
Execution- how clean they are
If you repeat tricks you will lose points for that. If you repeat the same grab, don't fully grab the board, put a hand down when you land etc , you lose points. There are a number of sections on the judging sheet: skate(grabs 180's), spins, rolls, flips, raleys, other(or mobes), the top half of the sheet is pass one, the bottom, pass two. Tricks are written down, we constantly are looking at previous riders rides to see who had the best run. If you ever have questions you can go to the head Judge (would've been Wade or RyGuy) and they could have gone over the judges sheets and shown you why you placed the way you did.
Being you're first comp you would not have known that, judging can be pretty difficult at times and people aren't always happy but as long as you had a good time then really in the end.....I hope this doesn't discourage you from competing again. And hey....some of the masters are not too bad....I'll be in it next year .....get ready to get your but whooped by a girl!! lol |

good thing you didn't come out. The weather SUCKED!! I only got to ride once, as did most of the classes except pro and the Jr men. They rode twice on the Saturday and Sunday was cancelled because it was going to be8 degrees, raining and windy.

I repeated my toeside 180 and I did a couple of heelside jumps off the start to get used to the wake. We were riding behind a Tige 24V which I've never ridden behind so it took a couple of jumps to get the feel of it. I suppose I just don't have a cometition type run, I do like to go big with my jumps and would rather do that then just go one wake on something simple. A lot of the competitors sucked toe side, me I can jump the wake and do a toe side wtw 180. That's two toeside jumps, what do you do after that then?
I suppose if I ever do enter another competition I can mix it up more, do a couple of one wake tricks, but it's really not as fun as just going out and riding.
Like I said, not a big deal, really just interested in what the judges were looking for. I suppose that kind of format doesn't really pick the best boarder, just the one with the most variety? _________________ Don't do anything rash.....and don't do anything to get a rash... |

Wow, I wouldn't say people "suck" just because they haven't ridden much and aren't at the stage yet where they can clear their ts which is hard to do. The judges do pick the best rider as a really good rider knows how to mix it up....which doen't mean everyone else sucks. Besides composition is only a third of the total score.
It sounds like you weren't very happy with competing, which is fine, it's not for everyone, you could do various TS grabs, learn how to do half cabs (switch 180) and even HS 180 to half cab.
Hope this helps, even though you came third I bet the prizes in the riders draw made up for the bronze medal, which is still really good! |

Sorry "sucked" isn't the word I should have used. I was just surprised at how many of the competitors couldn't jump toe side. I agree, when you're beginning it's pretty difficult to jump toeside, what surprised me was how many of the people had a couple of different heelside inverts but still couldn't jump the wake toeside?
The whole experience didn't turn me off, at some point I'd like to go in another comp. I'd ride much differently now that I know what the judges are looking for. If another comp comes to town I may enter, like I said, I had fun I just didn't know how the judges looked at things.
I was just looking at it from the stand point of who looked better, got bigger air, and looked smoother and more comfortable on the board. It's like, if Parks was riding, didn't throw an invert or anything special, he just did some jumps and by the way he rides and his style you just know he kicks. In a comp he'd lose to someone who did a bunch of one wake tricks right? The better the rider the more effortless it looks, that's what I'm getting at. I'd rather watch that all day then someone doing 25 different things poorly I suppose. You can usually tell if someone's good even before they do their first jump. Do you understand what I'm trying to get at?
As for prizes that's not why I entered. I just let my daughters go up and pick whatever they wanted. |
