86 Nautique "2001"

Okay, so it looks like i am going to go with a 86 "2001" Nautique.

I would love to afford a new V-drive but i just purchased a home so this is all i can swing for the time being.

I have done some research and from what i have read it seems that this is the best boat and best wake for the money.

The boat i am looking at is a 86 with the big 454 and has 575 hours on it.

The engine is in dynamite condition and the interior is super clean. The only beef i have is the color...all brown. Like solid brown.

I hear these things can have a pretty solid wake on them if weighted down properly.

Just looking for some thoughts on how the wake is and just what makes this boat a solid choice. This boat comes highly recommended to me.

I've never rode behind a 2001 but I have friends in my area with them. All pretty much agree that the heavily weighted wake is as good as an average modern wakeboard boat. If you are most interested in wake for your money and dont mind inconvenience, a 2001 is the way to go. It also should hold it's value real well so you can upgrade in a few years without losing any of your investment. If you cant handle limited space and fat sacs all over the floor but still have wake as a top priority then I'd go ahead and try to come up with enough money to get a mid nineties Vdrive of some sort.

I had an 86 2001 (and just recently sold it to someone on this list) I didn't have the big block, and unless you're pulling an ungawdly amount of skiers, you probably would't miss it (the 351 will do just fine)

My only complaint with the boat was that the rudder was dead-center behind the prop. That made the boat hard to put on the dock, and drive at slow speeds

Other than that, it was a great boat.

chaz28o, can you explain to me why it would be better to have the rudder off center to the prop? I cannot see that being a good thing...

G-Money, I have a 83 2001 SN and I love it. You can do anything with it that you could do with a more expensive newer boat, it just depends on how much work you want to put into it. As far as wake goes, I have heard many different things, but from my experience, it is the best wake you will get from any boat not specifically designed for wakeboarding. Put some weight in it (even 1000lbs in the right place) and you will end up with more wake then you know what to do with. Plus it is one of the most solid wakes around, even compared to newer boats....

Just how it works, I don't know. But my 88 Mastercraft had the rudder just off to one side (not very much mind you) and it was ever so much easier to drive at slow speeds, up to a dock & onto the trailer - If I remember, they call that "loading the rudder" but that was a long time ago

I sold my 88 mastercraft, bought a 91 barefoot sanger - sold it (pretty quickly, wife hated the outboard) and bought the 86 Nautique

I'm going to guess that it was probably around 87 or 88 that they started doing the offset, and now I think what they do is shave one side of the rudder? (don't quote me on that)

Maybe someone who understands it better will answer your question
