|
|
Well, if i am not at the lake, on the slopes, or skateboarding. My weekends are usually spent at the track....Just curious if anybody out there on these forums race karts?...
For those of you that don't know about kart racing, or are just wondering, they are not "Go-Carts" by any means , they are serious racing machines ....
I can take on just about any sports car...
0-60MPH times are just a bit above 3 seconds, and 0-30MPH times hover around the 1 sec area. Top-speeds around 100-120MPH. Lateral G-forces of about 3.5 G's.....Aint your everyday neighborhood go-cart.
The main reason they are so fast is the power to weight ratio. With me and the kart combined the weight is 360 LB, with about 30 HP, scoots you along quite well . The engine that i run in my class, is an 80cc liquid cooled, 6-speed gearbox 2-stroke engine, max RPM around 14,500....
A lot of the racers in todays motorsports all started in kart racing....
I will try and get some PICS posted of my kart if i can get them loaded...

| I read an article in a magazine about kart racing. The karts they reported about were 250cc 2-stroke karts, with top speeds of about 150. They were being driven by former world champ motorcycle racers like, Eddie Lawson and Wayne Rainey. No suspension, just a whole lot of speed. Capable of outrunning any production sports car in the world on the track, and only bested by the Formula One racers. The price they reported for one of these karts was about $20-30,000. It looks like a blast. |

| I raced karts from when I was 12 years old until I was 15. I startes out racing a Margay Briggs and was racing an Emmick Cobra CR 125 when I quit. After that I started racing outlaw sprint cars. That was fun. 750 hp in an 1100 lb racecar. I only raced sprint cars about half of a season because I didn't have the time to make the far away races and my dad was about to have a heart attack. It gets expensive real fast too. I hope to race sprint cars again after I graduate from college. |

I dont go to the track with them, but i have 2 of them. One of my dads clients had them, and my dad took them as partial payment. all i can say is damn thier fast. it took me awhile to get used to them.

You pretty much summed it up with that...
But those would be "road race" karts AKA super karts, they usually race on tracks such as Sears point, Laguna Seca, Road Atlanta, and so on....Yes, several of the former super bike drivers have gotten into kart racing. the type of racing i do usually is sprint racng, still road courses but usually about 3/4-1 mile long tracks.
It is quite interesting, the road race karts are about 1 second faster than the World superbikes at Laguna seca. And at Sears point/infinion, i am almost 2 seconds faster than the NASCAR Cup cars !
People often underestimate the power, and handling capabilites of these things.....
I will get some pics up.....

Curious supra?...DO u race?.....
Here are some PICS. the red one is mine, which is a "shifter", has a 6-speed gear box, you can see the radiator to the right of the seat. The blue one is a buddy's of mine, it is a 125cc single gear (about 16,500 RPM). They rn't the pretties karts out there, but they get the job done

| What happened to Tillett (sp) seats. Everyone had one of those back when I raced karts. I've never seen that kind that you are running. Other than that they don't appear to have changed much. What size rear axle do you run? Seems like when I was racing some tracks wouldn't allow longer than 55". |

Yes, Tillett seats are still around. That is the type of seat i use....I run the Formula 80 class (shifter), and my friend runs T.A.G. (touch and go), which is an electric start 125cc liquid cooled class. Axle, mine is set at about 52 inches or so, many tracks if not all still have the 55 inch rule. As far as axle diameter, it is a 40mm, and my friend runs a 50mm, which are new within the past few yrs in karting. WHen you raced karts, what class did you race?....
We also use onboard DATA acquisistion units to store data and help tune the engine. Tells us everything and anything about the engine(Temp, water temp, RPM, ETC, and lap times. We can then download the data into a laptop right there at the track or computer at home and that will help us tune the engine

Yeah, many people think that, but it is just about the safest form of motorsports out there. We are required to run a full face helmet, racing suit, gloves, high-top racing shoes, and a neck brace when racing....
Here are some more PICS....
What the saftey gear and what not looks like>>>
PIC of one of the onboard DATA acquisistion units we use>>>
Another pic of the onboard Unit mounted into the steering wheel>>>
And just a pic of a kart i thought looked better than mine>>>

really, i just don't see how, but i guess there are somethings that you just cant understand, it seems to me that there is nothing between you and and a wall if you happen to run into one, and at 70 mph it seems like that would be a bad thing. Buti guess you kno more than I do _________________ ow thats gonna hurt tomorrow

I started out in Jr. Briggs. Then moved up to Reed motors in another Margay chassis, then went to an unlimited class. The unlimited class was just a West Texas thing as far as I know. At the time kart racing in West Texas wasn't very big and we had just opened a track. The classes were just separated by briggs, 2 stroke single gear, and reed motors, then each of those were divided in to Jr. and Sr. We didn't even have a shifter class starting out so if you couldn't pass for any of the previous classes there was an unlimited class. I ran a '98 Emmick Cobra chassis with a 97 Honda CR 125 6-speed (98 and 99 were 5 speeds.) There was a guy with a KTM 360 that broke every race and a few 80 cc shifters. We would just run the local races (Lubbock, San Angelo, Midland) because my dad was busy with work and racing sprint cars.
One of my friends still races karts. I think they do fairly well. They make most of the big races between Texas and Florida and I think are the only dealers of Italkart chassis in America. |
