I don't know if these questions are very appropriate to be in a wakeboard forum, but I know you guys won't let me down.
First off, i'm a Canadian citizen and i'm interested in moving to California, where I plan to go to College/University. I done some research on the subject and have come up with very limited results. So i'm relying on you guys to help with the rest of my questions.
1. Do most Colleges/Universities accept international students?
2. Are tuition prices any differant for international students?
3. Can a Canadian citizen take up residence in The United States without an American citizenship? (ie. renting an appartment while attending school)
4. With exception to speaking English proficiently, and having knowledge of U.S. history and goverment, are there any requirments for becoming a U.S. citizen?
5. How long does the process of Naturalization take in the United States?
In conclusion, all I really want to know is if it is practical for me, a Canadian citizen, to move into the United States ,get my education, and take up permanent residence there.
Thanks to all who took the time to read through this, your help is greatly appreciated. |

1) easer to get in to schools BC they have to meet requirements for race. any international student wanting to go to a US school has a better chance to get in simply bc it makes the college look international.
2) not only the same, but normally higher. my university is around 8 grand a year for me instate but like 17 grand for out of state |

1. Do most Colleges/Universities accept international students? yes.
2. Are tuition prices any differant for international students? yes, they're usually quite a bit higher if you haven't been a resident of that state for over a year.
3. Can a Canadian citizen take up residence in The United States without an American citizenship? I know you can to work in the US so I'm pretty sure you should be able to for school, it gets tricky sometimes though, like if you don't go to school in the summer, you'd have to have some other reason to stay around (like a job) or go back to canada. To take up premanent residence, like you say at the bottom, you would have to become a citizen.
4. With exception to speaking English proficiently, and having knowledge of U.S. history and goverment, are there any requirments for becoming a U.S. citizen? you don't have to speak english to become a citizen. you have to know the pledge of aleigance, and national anthem. The test involves history, laws, and some geography (i think). They also might ask you wierd questions like state birds and junk. Also I've heard it's easiest for Canadians to become US citizens (but that's only what I've heard).
5. How long does the process of Naturalization take in the United States? 5 years, I don't know really, but for some reason that pops in my head. _________________ Some female cows have horns, but you wouldn't really know anything about that now would you? |

Two words: Green card.
My friend Devon floated over here in a mazda, and goes to school and everything. She is still a canadian citizen.
As for naturalization...i will ask around. |

| Contact an immigration lawyer. You can find many in the Los Angeles area on a google or yahoo search. You will want to apply to the school and get accepted, then apply for your student visa. The visa is good for the duration of your schooling, which can then be applied to your length of stay for citizenship application. |

2) Actually, tuition rates are only higher in public univerities (UC system for example), but if you were to go to a private university (USC for example), then your tuition would be the same as those who are citizens of California. _________________ "I knew those girls were pros, but don't tell Turtle, it'll break his heart." - Drama, Entourage |

| 4) With some of the people that have received citizenship in my town, I would say it's probably easier than getting a drivers license. |

Here's a website that will answer many of your naturalization questions
BTW, my boss is from Canada and she just got naturalized. One tip from her, make sure that if you leave the United States for any reason, you keep detailed logs of when and where. They are really getting picky about this stuff since 9/11. I had to pull up all of her out of country info from the past 15 years.

Of course, the best way - marry a US citizen (I keep thinking of Fez on that 70's Show)
