I've been reading trick tips on whirly birds lately and they are all kind of different. Some say to cut like a tantrum and basically just turn your back towards the boat during the cut. And some say a million things about the rope in front of your eyes and stuff. Well which one is it? Are both important? Because I haven't seen any tips yet that mention both.

Its a little of both. You definately use a trip flip edge just like a tantrum, but you wanna lay off a little to take the trick up instead of out. Once you have started the rotation you wanna pull the handle across your face and turn your head. Hope this helped a little.
