I'm debating how to sound to my '86 Centurion. No existing system, and no convenient place to put a standard deck. I'm wondering if anyone has had success with car amps and an MP3 player but no head unit? Is it possible?

TIA.

Hey gus, I'm running some Kicker amps along with a SONY MP80 headunit, and am toying with the idea of running my Ipod through the receiver. I'm not sure how successful you'd be trying to build a setup for the Ipod without a receiver of some sort. Even if you could get it to work, I think you'd end up losing a lot of flexibility without the sound shaping controls found on a good receiver.

Good luck. Very Happy

With that setup, do you have any control over the sound you put into the amp(s) (i.e. Bass, Treble, Balance, Fader, etc)? I would also think the input source for the amp(s) (i.e. output from the Ipod) would be really weak compared to the preamp outs on a receiver.

i didnt say it was great. but will work. no you dont have any control unless the ipod or mp3 player that your using has some sort of eq. the pre amp signal should pretty close unless your talking 4v outputs. it didnt sound that bad when i did it.
try it and if you dont like you have spent nothing{except 5$+/- switch}

gus jd it is possible, though not great.
you could run your ipod out to the amp through a speaker level input from your headphone jack, this would work though you are introducing distortion when your ipod amp craps out, as well there is an efficiency loss using this system.
You could buy a amp level control (I know RF makes one) and then run your minijack to RCA adapter out thru that and you would have a cleaner signal, no tone control though.
I guess give it a shot and see how good/bad it sounds.

you could hook up the ipod using a pre-amp eq. most pre-amp eqs. have
volume control, high, mid,sub controls. and two inputs. they start at round $75.00..
