Does anyone else get soar back muscles the day after riding? I rode on Friday night and i could feel it Sat morning, and i can still feel it now and it's Mon morning. If not maybe my technique is all wrong, or i need to work out on a regular basis.

yeah, I do every time I go out. It doesn't matter if I've been doing it 3 times a week or once a month, my back is always sore at the end. Usually along with my legs, arms, and neck.

My back also gets very sore. Some times it gets so sore that when i bent over to do anything i would lose my breath. This year i have been doing dead lifts where you bend over and pick up weights keeping your back straight. This has helped a ton. i would suggest doing this for everyone.

Hey KurtInCincy - if that's you in the upper left of the collage pic in your profile, you look a little bent at the waist. That will put stress on the muscles in your lower back. jeff_moto is right on the money about posture during deadlifts - use the same posture while boarding. Think about lifting with your legs instead of your back. Bend your knees and bring the handle in low to your hip in order to keep your center of gravity low and maintain balance, don't bend at the waist. Think about it - if the handle is high your back works harder to resist the pull of the boat. kswiss has another good suggestion in riding switch. Use different muscles or use them a different way.

I have 3 damaged discs in my lower back, so as you might imagine I try to take care of them when I board. If I feel my back getting tired, one thing I do is bend slightly at the knees, keep my back straight, and let go of the handle with my back hand so I'm not twisting at all. That gives me a few seconds for my back to relax. When you're done riding, stretch the muscles out - lay on your back and have someone stretch your hams, one at a time. You can also do that stretch against the corner of a wall.

Hope some of that helps. Good luck bro!

Thats mein the pic but it was taken the first year i started this sport (2 yrs ago). I don't ride like that now. No, i don't ride switch very often but i'm learning slowly.
I'll try stretching hamstrings when i'm finished.
Jeff - how far do you lift the weights up?

Most people, when lifting and riding, forget that their back has extremely important muscles in it, as well as your abs.

I suggest streching, as minndizzyg said, but also do sit ups, oblique exercises and some back extensions. Hip flexors and hammies can have a huge effect on your posture as well.

you start with two pretty heavy weights at your feet. you bend over at the waist(Don't bend your knees) and pick the weights up. In one rep the weights should get pretty close to the floor but not touching and then back up to your back being straight.

Go here for some very good info on deadlifts my description sucks.
