|
|
G'day,
well, i've been looking at boats, and have had soem people tell me that their d-drive boats porpoise, while their v-drive boats don't, and vice versa, what is the reality? I can't see either of these boats porpoising when loaded up with weight, but what do i know, i don't own one...YET...
any suggestions?

Porpoising is the result of a balance problem between the waterpressure on the hull and the weight of the boat while on plane. This can be caused by a poor hull design, improper weight distribution, or poor driving skills. Some boats have more problems with this than others. If it does become a problem, trim tabs are used to force the bow down to eliminate the problem. If you weight down the stern too much, most boats will porpoise. I have not had the problem with my Gekko - it has a extension on the hull astern of the prop and rudder that eliminates the problem.
If in doubt, put a Fly High Fat Seat in the stern and run the boat at different speeds to see if it happens. _________________ Original Boarder from 1983

"it has a extension on the hull astern of the prop and rudder that eliminates the problem." so it has a fixed fiberglass trim tab right |

My 02 Laguna has NEVER porpoised.....cruising at any speed under 20mph...she looks a little like a low-rider on the back end..which I LOVE...kinda drags her ass in the water....
@ 28mph and above..she's A cup size material _________________ WWW.STEREOINTEGRITY.COM

my Malibu VLX has only porpoised when we had way too much weight in the back and none in the front. Apart from that one time, it's never porpoised since then.
My old Sea Ray I/O used to purpoise if the trim wasn't set correctly.

| i think most boats will porpoise when too much weight is in the back and you reach a certain speed...most never do it around wakeboarding speeds though. I've had boats that did it, but only when (like pedboydan) I got around 32-34mph w/ too much weight in the back |

Regular Inboard...pretty much a family skier in 02...Never been on a flatter wake doing 34 mph...but then again...this isn't a skiing forum
It sure has hell feels like one when you crank the wheel all the way around doing 30+ mph....still stays flat too... _________________ WWW.STEREOINTEGRITY.COM
