Has anyone slapped on some aluminum rims onto their trailer, to be more specific, a DHM tandem? We went to our local Tige dealer, and they told us first off that they don't sell aftermarket rims, well that I already knew, but I just needed to know, so then they told us it couldn't be done for two reasons. One being that the aftermarket wheels don't work on the axle, and two being that the aluminum mags aren't heavy duty enough for towing... I kinda doubted all of this because I have seen it done many times, so is something really different about my trailer, or is this guy just bs'ing me because he would rather me buy his unhetero stock, steel rims?
I have the DHM trailer that came stock with an 04 SAN, if that helps. I have no idea how this would work because of the trailer bearings and stuff, but I just need some extra fact here. I was hoping to get some larger rims and lower profile tires on the trailer.

I ordered my new Supra with Aluminum rims. Loads on a boat trailer can't be as high as a truck. I don't know about the lower profile though. That might effect the way it rides/handles. A good tire shop should be able to tell you though.

| Well, if the trailor has wider, better tracking tires with lower sidewalls, it is only going to get less roll over on the tire itself while turning... Maybe a bit bumpier ride, but we aren't going to be in it while it is getting trailered, so that shouldn't matter. I was just really curious about the mounting process. |

Oh, ok, I guess they are just normal bolt patterns. I will take it down tomorrow (weekend is going to be spent working on the boat since its Memorial Day weekend and the lakes are packed) and see if they can do anything with it. I will be sure to post pics on how it comes out.

What do you mean by "mounting process?" Wouldn't it work just like car wheels and tires? Just find out your bolt pattern and offset. Then just get a "plus sized" setup, i.e. taller wheels with lower-profile tires so the circumference stays the same.
The pattern and offset should be stamped somewhere on your wheels. If not, you can just measure them yourself. _________________ We are wakeboarders and our culture is advanced beyond all that you can possibly comprehend with one hundred percent of your brain. |

Yeah, I just figured that out.
What I was concerned about is the Bearing Buddy, but I guess that stays on there and the surrounding bolt pattern mounts like a car's would. |

hey,
check out americanracing.com for some rims. They should mount on alright, just have to find the right bolt patterm. my buddy got a set for his trailer off there.
I agree with lakeboarder, the wear and tear that a truck gives to rims is way more than a trailer will give.
They are normal bolt patterns, however the one thing you are gonig to want to be careful with are whether the rims are 'offset' at all to prevent rubbing.

I change ours on a DHM trailer. Went to 15x7 aluminum with 205/65 series tires. They look much better and ride better than the originals. Just watch the back spacing. _________________ " I have a fever....... and the only prescription is more cow bell. " |

Ya know, with the neon. I actually think that would be a good idea. It seems that i am taking my boat out a lot at night and it is a pain to see the trailer in the water. If i put some neons on it, it would be no problem. And it just so happens i have an undercar streetglow kit in my garage.  _________________ Brent B

We had neons in mind, but what about the water+light contact? BUZZZZZZ or no buzz, cuz that would hurt...
I also knew about the offset, and I wanted to get them flush with the fenders. Spinners would be cool, but kinda impractical...maybe neons IN the spinners eh? Just a thought...
American Racing has some nice rims. I am getting a stock 2002 F-150 soon after I trade in my truck I have now, and I was planning on getting some rims on it, and it would be cool to match them. Need to paint the truck to match the boat though first, both black with red stripes, and red neons  |
